In Bukit Mertajam, there’s a battle of fruit Rojak among three stalls all located at the same intersection. Even the stalls have similar names as well in like 黑人罗惹 (Orang Hitam), 白人罗惹 (Orang Putih) and 黑白人罗惹 (Orang Hitam Putih). Was it a case of riding on other’s fame to confuse the unknowing customers, or was it a lack of naming creativity, I really don’t know lol.
But if my memory serves me correctly, Orang Hock is the first stall and hence so-called the authentic BM Rojak. By the way, Bukit Mertajam’s rojak sauce is quite good and usually bought by visitors as hand gifts to bring home.
But as far as taste goes, I feel all three of them are quite similar. There’s really no distinctive difference except maybe on the quality of fruits that they use. But if you ask me which stall gives the most crushed peanuts, I’d say it’s Orang Hock’s.

While I can be definite that Malaysia has better Prawn Noodle and it’s a draw for Chicken Rice, what about satay? Before I came to Singapore, a friend told me that Singaporeans weren’t impressed with our Satay – especially Sate Kajang.
After surveying around and tasted countless sticks of satay in Singapore, I have to agree with the Singaporeans and conclude that their satay is generally more delicious. And my vote for the nicest halal satay goes to Haron Satay at East Coast Lagoon Food Village. Until I can find a better one, I have set Haron Satay as the standard to beat for future satay comparison.
If you are in Singapore looking for a relaxing spot next to a beach with plenty of food, then East Coast Park is a great choice. A huge food court is situated here and I estimate there’s about 50-60 stalls here mainly selling satay and seafood.
One of the things I like most about Singapore food is the affordability. Compared dollar-to-dollar, you will realize how cheap the food is for the locals. It costs $0.50 for a skewer regardless of the chosen meat may it be chicken, beef, mutton or babat (cow’s stomach).
But if you insist on converting then it’s about RM1.20 for every stick, which is quite pricey if you are having it in Malaysia. For tourists it’s hard not to convert, I understand. I used to do that for the first few weeks after I arrived in Singapore and everything seemed so expensive in RM! But now I am starting to get used with it.

If you like your nasi lemak with extra ingredients then you gotta give Village Park @ Damansara Uptown a try. Besides plain nasi lemak, they offer various dishes as additional add-ons like ayam goreng rempah, sambal udang, sambal petai and even rendang.
Village Park is very popular and often comes in top for nasi lemak, especially after they had been named as the best nasi lemak by FriedChillies. I don’t know about FriedChillies’ credibility, but it certainly helps in many ways. For me, I came based on the many suggestions I got from friends.
I anticipated Village Park would be very crowded because of their popularity, but didn’t quite expect the crowd to be so huge lol. On an early Sunday morning, the queue for the nasi lemak alone was shockingly long, and there were no seats too despite having tables set up over a span of three shops including the parking space in front.
