Palace of Emperor Dim Sum
May 2nd
Palace of Emperor [tag]Dim Sum[/tag] [tag]restaurant[/tag] has been around in [tag]Bukit Mertajam[/tag] 大山脚 for quite some time already. It is located in Taman Ciku along the road to BM town. It actually resides within the Ng Yam Huat food court next to the abandoned Utama shopping complex.
Usually I won’t simply patronize any dim sum restaurants, especially those which are not too popular. But Palace of Emperor’s dim sum is surprisingly good.
Also tried the wantan mee here but it was very terrible. It was so bad that I couldn’t believe anyone could posses the skills to prepare such lousy wantan mee lol.
There’s another thing about Ng Yam Huat food court. When TVB actors/singers from Hong Kong visit BM, they will normally hold a meeting session in this food court. For what reasons I am not sure lol, I find nothing special about it anyway.

Zim Sum Tea Garden
Mar 24th
Touted as the best [tag]dim sum[/tag] in [tag]Penang[/tag] by some, I just had to try it for myself. Zim Sum Tea Garden dim sum restaurant is located directly opposite KDU along Anson Road. If you have difficulties finding this place, just look out for Penang Plaza and Sheraton Hotel.
The variety here is good enough, there are a few dim sum which are new to me. But I just took the common ones.
Some of the staff here are quite rude and clumsy.. Our table was knocked hard by the push carts and I was excused to make way for the waitress at least twice for each incident. If I were to open a restaurant, she’d be the first to go. To me as a customer, that’s a totally unacceptable attitude.
Egg tarts are good, warm and fresh from the oven. I like egg tarts like these, with puffy crusts.
This twin buns have char siew in them. There are other varieties as well like peanut and meat floss.
Overall, I won’t think too highly of Zim Sum Tea Garden. The dim sum taste mediocre although they look really good. I was already disappointed and lost a bit of mood after my first bite.. Worse still, there was a pirated DVD peddler from China getting caught and handcuffed by the enforcers right in front of me. Man, that totally put off my appetite. The only good thing about this place is the cheap price, I only spent RM11.20 for this meal.
Sweet Paradise Dim Sum (Revisit)
Oct 3rd
Last weekend I went to Sweet Paradise/Chew Chun Dim Sum Restaurant again. It has received much praise since our last visit. So this time so my father and brother came along too.
We arrived quite late at 10.30 am for breakfast but the place was still crowded. Because Mooncake Festival is near, banners promoting their own mooncakes were seen hanging around. Besides being well known for good dim sum, Chew Chun is also famous for its mooncake. The mooncakes are priced at RM7.50 per packet.
Finally we get to try their egg tarts. They still look as nice and very reasonably priced at RM1.40 for a plate of two. I think it is quite difficult to get egg tarts at such price now ..one would cost RM0.90 already. The outer layer is puffy and crispy, while the egg custard is around an inch thick and not too sweet. Very nice egg tarts
These look like Siu Bao, but they actually contain lotus paste and century egg (皮蛋) Definitely good stuff and very filling!
Fried Chu Cheong Fun @ RM3.00 is a disappointment, it tasted bland. Because chu cheong fun is too thick, so the inner layers hardly got fried. The only good thing about this dish is the 3 big sized prawns. These are the dim sum we had that day, so pelase enjoy the photos!
“Sweet Paradise” Dim Sum Restaurant @ Butterworth
Sep 3rd
Heeding recommendations from my colleagues, I decided to try a restaurant in Butterworth hailed to serve dim sum better than Penang island. The exact location of the restaurant was unclear to me so I spent half an hour looking for it. Prior to that I only knew it was behind HSBC and the police station..
“Sweet Paradise” 超全 [tag]Dim Sum[/tag] Restaurant is located opposite Pasar Sri Bandar in Bagan Baru, Butterworth. For a dim sum restaurant it is certainly huge, able to accomodate at least 60-70 people at any time.
One will need to get their dim sum from a counter which is manned by a guy who looks so alike to Jackie Chan’s son.. Jaycee. He had posed but I was too busy taking other pictures, and when I really wanted to take his photo, he was too shy already lol. Nice guy la, re-heated my dim sum when I asked him to
Besides steamed dim sum, pastries and fried dim sum are up for grabs. The egg tarts certainly looked nice and crispy
Almost all the dim sum served had prawns in them.. From the top, L-R: Minced meat/vegetable on dried seaweed, Har Kao, 3 different siu mai in a small bowl, Minced meat wrapped in dried seaweed, Seafood tofu topped siumai and clams. FYI the clam shells were not re-used, because they really contained clam flesh. Among all, what I liked most was the Har Kao, the prawns were really juicy and fresh, definitely the best I have tasted so far. The bill was surprisingly cheap, RM22 inclusive of a pot of tea.
