Jalil Special Ice Kacang @ Food Court Next To Fort Cornwallis
Jun 7th
I have found a new favorite stall for ice kacang in Penang and it is Jalil Special Ice Kacang. Being halal is another good thing because everyone can enjoy it. The stall is just next to Mee Sotong Hameed Pata in the food court between the huge field and Fort Cornwalis at Esplanade.
I ordered an ice kacang from the waiters but it didn’t arrive even after 15 minutes. I thought they had forgotten since there were a lot of customers during lunch hour. Even though I reminded the guy he didn’t seem to take notice and appeared to ignore me. There was not even a slight affirmation shown.
Seeing this I was about to give up and walk away after having my mee goreng there. And then the ice kacang came lol. So I think they were just too occupied remembering all the orders that they behave like this. Anyway my point is, don’t mind the service – your order will come eventually.
Home Made Durian Ice Cream & Ice Kacang @ Kek Seng Coffee Shop
Jan 21st
Whenever people ask me for places to eat in Penang, Kek Seng will always be one of my recommendations. Old and nostalgic aside (they still preserve the square wooden tables and chairs), home made durian ice cream is a rarity nowadays and fortunately for us it is still available at Kek Seng. Also, their one of a kind ice kacang topped with ice cream balls and colorful jellies is such an eye candy and a nice treat during hot weathers.
At RM3.50, the default ice cream ice kacang comes with two scoops of random ice cream, which could be strawberry, corn or chocolate flavored. So if you want your ice cream to be durian flavored, remember to specify it. Kek Seng does not skimp on the ingredients, as you can see the ice kacang was flooded with sweet corn and red beans.
Then there’s the jellies or agar-agar, one being a little sour and zesty tasting like lemon and the other being a little sweet. My first time having Kek Seng’s ice kacang was three years ago and I am glad to say the quality is still there. However, it still remains second best to me because of the absence of sarsi flavor. Somehow it did not feel so refreshing compared to the other ice kacang due to this.
Melaka Food | Jonker 88 Desserts @ Jonker Street – Cendol & Ais Kacang
Mar 11th
So, you are visiting Melaka, strolling along the famous Jonker Street. Then you get exhausted and sweating from all the walking and sun, wanting to get a place to sit down and enjoy icy cool desserts. Don’t fret! Jonker 88, a self-claimed Museum Cafe located right at the middle of Jonker Street serves some home-made cendol and ice kacang, unique only to Melaka.
OK that intro wasn’t really necessary if you have been to Jonker Street, lol. I bet most of you who have visited Melaka already tried the famous cendol and ice kacang right? No? Then do remember to try the desserts in your next trip yeah. That been said, lets proceed with the foooooood.
Oops, blur photo! Anyway this is the critically acclaimed Durian Cendol that everyone seemed to love. But dude, where’s my durian syrup? Do you see any? Me neither. Actually the syrup was there (I saw she poured it on the cendol with my own eyes) but I guess I was the unlucky one for getting so little durian love from the lady. Definitely not “durian” enough so I didn’t enjoy, hmmph. So remember to ask for more durian syrup lah.
Having no idea what to choose for the second dessert, I simply picked the E.P.C, which stands for Eight Precious Cendol. I am gueesing this cendol had eight different ingredients under the shaved ice from its name. Peanuts and cendol are pretty obvious but I didn’t check the rest of the ingredients though.
Gula Melaka (palm sugar) and Santan were heavily drizzled on both desserts, but not as much if compared to my first visit 4 years ago. That time, the word “flooded” would be more appropriate, lol. Actually this worked for me because I feel too much Gula Melaka would spoil the cendol for its overpowering taste and oversweetness.
Anyway, I have said it before and I will say it again.. I still like Penang’s version of cendol and ice kacang more, hehe.
Ais Kacang @ Lorong Selamat
Apr 27th
A nice bowl of ais kacang during a hot day does wonders
I was spending the day hunting for my new camera and it was scorching hot. So, we stopped at Lorong Selamat to enjoy some ais kacang and to cool off. And do you know that the famous char koay teow here has moved to their own coffee shop? Their new shop is a corner shop at the end of the road. I think the char koay teow stall’s migration has affected the business a lot.. it used to be difficult to find a seat. Now, seats are freely available.
This is one of the nicer ais kacang in Penang which has still managed to maintain the quality and taste (unlike New World Park‘s) The price did went up a bit though.. Another ais kacang stall I’d recommend would be Penang Road’s.. will blog about that in future.
Anyway this is the first photo I took after I got my EOS 400D, it’s crappy lol. And having a 50mm lens, I’m always trying to play with depth of field and create some nice bokeh shots. Until today I still haven’t mastered the DSLR.. especially under tricky lighting conditions.
