‘Tao Kae Noi’ Japanese Crispy Seaweed
Oct 27th
Bought this snack back in Perak at a stop opposite the Perak Cave. ‘Tao Kae Noi‘ the brand means little tauke seen on the packaging. Lol, cute name. Did some search on the Internet and it was revealed to be a Thailand product. Hmm.. Hokkien name, with Japanese ingredients and processed in Thailand.. what a multinational snack
Anyway the price for a packet is RM3.20. Also worth mentioning is that this snack is suitable for vegetarians.
There are a few big slices of seaweed in a packet. Each slice is fried till really crispy and tasted a bit salty and spicy. ‘Tao Kae Noi’ Japanese Crispy Seaweed is not only sold in Perak as I saw it being sold in supermarkets a while ago. So it is quite available actually, a recommended treat ![]()

Breakfast as supper
Oct 26th
Felt hungry the other night so cooked up some meatloaf and scrambled egg for supper. I wanted to make some sandwiches but didn’t have bread around.. I already had the other ingredients ready like cheese and salad mayonaise. Anyway the scrambled egg was an ‘accident’ lol. I was trying to fry them sunny side up but the whole process went wrong. I ended up scraping and tossing the egg around, which ended up with some nice fragrant scrambled egg. Breakfast as supper, not bad at all ![]()
Crab Meat Hor Fun
Oct 24th
It’s the first day of Raya and I am all alone with no one to dine with lol, so pitiful. A recent comment by a reader Mick prompted me to go try a Crab Meat Hor Fun stall in Lau Yew coffee shop Bukit Mertajam 大山脚. FYI Lau Yew is a quite big sized hawker centre located in the town. I used to enjoy a cup of tea here before my tuition session starts in IBM. It’s been years since I last came, it sure brought back some nice memories..
I assume that the stall is managed by a couple of husband and wife. Business was good from my observation.. orders were coming in quite often. Only a few stalls were also open only at that time (7.20pm) They were char koay teow, Thai fried rice and fried chicken.
My order arrived very fast. The colorful ingredients used made the dish looked really great. Red char siew, yellow egg yolk, green vegetables, white strands of something-I-dunno and brown hor fun. Besides looking great, it also tasted wonderful. The hor fun itself is already very good, and when fried together with the sweet crab meat.. it’s even nicer. Can’t imagine if prawns were used too.. that’d be heavenly lol. Thanks to Mick for his recommendation

Nissin Sesame Flavor Egg Noodles
Oct 23rd
This was my dinner last night
My mom didn’t cook as she was having vegetarian food. My brother and sister were out of town and it was raining quite heavily outside. Nissin Sesame Flavor Egg Noodles was bought in Snack City last month @ RM3.00.
I was expecting some dried vegetables or meat but only found MSG and a packet of sesame oil. Preparation was very simple, empty the sachets into the bowl and pour in hot water.
The noodles tasted OK, but I threw half of it away because the proportion was too big. You know how instant noodles taste when having too much of it.. ueek! Definitely won’t try it again, not even the other flavors lol. Verdict: Keep away.
Canton, Hongkong Food @ Eastern Station
Oct 22nd
Since patronizing a
Eastern Station Restaurant is located in i-Avenue, the new commercial building in Bayan Lepas. There are many Japanese, Korean and Chinese restaurants here. The restaurant itself is quite small actually, but nicely designed. I especially like the transparent kitchen where you can look into what the chefs are doing.
Our order was set E that consists 2 types of roasted meat, rice and soup. I like the plates they use, they are stylish. Made me feel like getting a set for myself lol.
The roasted meat available to choose from are pork, chicken, duck and char siew. We chose roasted pork and duck because roasted chicken seemed very common.. can get it almost anywhere.
The soup given is double boiled ‘Sai Yong Choy’ soup. It had quite a lot of vegetable, a few pieces of meat and bits of dried cuttlefish and red dates. Very tasty!
Belacan Kangkung is not part of the set meal, it was an additional order. Siang Leng and I tend to order this vegetable everytime we go to a new restaurant lol. It was quite good actually, but was not spicy at all.
We were billed RM21.50, RM16.50 for the set meal and RM5 for the kangkung. A recommended restaurant for a nice dinner on Friday nights.

Zui Xiang Lou Restaurant
Oct 19th
“Zui Xiang Lou” is a Chinese restaurant located opposite the Bukit Mertajam’s St Anne Church. FYI, 醉乡 (Zui Xiang) translates to Drunken Village. My parents had a dinner with some relatives a few weeks ago and found the food to be quite good. So we decided to try again.
The restaurant was empty when we were there. That’s not because the business was bad, we were just early (we usually have our dinner at 6pm)
Everytime we go to a new restaurant, we will order their fried mee tiao. I don’t know why, but this dish alone will kinda justify a restaurant’s food. Fortunately it tasted good lol.
招牌豆腐 Their signature fried tofu is good stuff. They are stuffed with a mix of tofu and meat, which makes them.. elastic? The outer layer is surprisingly crispy too!
This is the most expensive dish for our meal. Claypot Seafood that wasn’t cooked in a claypot.. I think it costed around RM26-27, kinda cut throat eh?
Tong Po Rou, a dish invented by someone called Su Tong Po back in China long time ago. If my memory serves me correctly, he wanted to preserve the pork so he used dark soya sauce. Like many other Chinese dishes, it slowly transformed into a delicacy. It is prepared using the 3-layered pork belly and buns are given to eat with the gravy.
Lemon Chicken, normal stuff. We ordered because we missed it
The last dish, Garlic Prawns also tasted normal only. Gave me a bad breath after that lol
