Cashew Nut Cookies

February 7, 2007

Just sent my brother to the Bayan Lepas airport, hope he enjoys his working trip to US. And I am in the office so early.. so I will bore you further with more CNY cookies we made last weekend :P

Cashew nut cookies was what we baked. After laying the dough, we used a fork to press for the desired pattern. Then brush the dough’s surface with egg white using a brush (mopi). This is to make the cookies look nicer when they are done.

We put half a cashew nut on each dough and applied some pressure so that it will stick. The cashew nuts can also be brushed with egg white. That way, they will appear golden brown and taste better too! Too bad we only realised it until the last batch of cookies.

Fresh from the microwave!

One of my job was to move them into a bigger tray and so they can cool down.

A recipe can fit into 2 big containers like this. It takes skill and time to arrange them nicely leh! My mom’s cashew nut cookies and pineapple tarts taste so good that people wanted to order them! But considering the time and cost needed, it’s not feasible to receive orders. Let me break down the costs:

  • 1/2 kg cashew nut = RM12
  • butter = RM2.35
  • sugar = RM1
  • container (L) = RM1.20, (S) = RM1
  • electricity cost (microwave) = RM5?

So per container of cookies’ raw cost is around RM10 already. And I doubt the electricity cost is that little because we used the microwave for the whole morning. Hard to make profit la like this, somemore there were 4 of us working.. if we wanted to bake extra, better keep for ourselves and serve our guests during Chinese New Year :P

Chinese New Year Cookies

February 3, 2007

This year we are baking our Chinese New Year cookies early because my brother will be leaving to US very soon and won’t be here to celebrate CNY with us. So the cookies are for him to bring to US, and we already had an early reunion dinner last week lol.

Unbaked pineapple tarts. The process of making the pineapple jam easily takes up half a day because it must be cooked slowly.

We used to make pineapple tarts in rolled form, but this year we made it the other way because it’s much easier (less work :P) Home made pineapple tarts are simply the best. Those sold in supermarkets are just yucks, and super expensive too.

We also made some batches of groundnut cookies.

We gave a plate of cookies to our neighbour. Clockwise: corn flakes, caterpillar, almond and groundnut cookies. And in the middle, pineapple tarts.

It must be their luck being our neighbour, don’t you think? lol.

Jetty Restaurant

February 2, 2007

Jetty Restaurant is a seafood restaurant in Batu Maung which I got to know from my colleague. The only reason I would want to dine here is because it is said to be have a ‘floating on the sea feeling’.. The restaurant is awkwardly situated by a small port, deep in a small hill. And because it’s constructed on sea water, it can be a bit shaky hence the floating feel.

Not gonna give out the direction to the restaurant because this dinner was a bad experience, one of the worst I had. Not only I was brutally overcharged, the food did not taste as good as the pricing should have suggested.

Fried rice was ok. At least my RM3.50 was not wasted. But seriously, if they couldn’t even fry a plate of rice properly, don’t even bother opening a restaurant.

This is the ultimate ripoff.. 6 medium sized prawns fried in curry powder costed me a freaking RM18!! RM18 I can buy 2kg of big fresh prawn from the market already, fry myself better la! Oh damn I still can feel the pain even when I am typing this..

This is one of their specialty, deep fried boneless chicken wing stuffed with seafood. It’s something new alright but damn expensive, RM4.50 per wing!

They only have yau choi, and the only vegetable to choose from are kai lan and lettuce. Period.

The satays are sold by a small stall beside the restaurant. They tasted just like the satays sold in Bukit Tambun - meaty and barbequed together with the peanut sauce. The most ridiculous thing I find about this restaurant is the seafood.. There’s hardly anything to order besides fish, crab and prawn. And the cooking methods are so limited too. No wonder business was bad. RM38.50 I rather go eat at Domino’s, can order 2 large pizzas already. Super satisfying somemore. I am gonna restrict myself from having seafood in Batu Maung anymore.. none of them is as good and cheap as those in Bukit Tambun.
