Ingolf’s Kneipe German Bar and Restaurant
One of the nicest thing working in Jabil is getting the quarterly profit sharing. Every quarter all the employees would get a share of the company’s profit based on the performance in the past 6 months. The last quarter was the highest percentage of all time, and it’d be a very tough record to break. So I treated my family a lunch in Ingolf’s Kneipe German Restaurant and Bar.
Kneipe means bar in German, it is well known for its nice, big portioned and reasonably priced German cuisine.
Since we went in the afternoon, only lunch menu is served. Still, they have quite a wide selection of food to choose from. Their special lunch set would be lamb shank at RM23 something.. I ordered a Duo New Zealand Lamb Chop with mint sauce. It was OK only, maybe because I didn’t like the mint taste.. and the meal was kinda dry because there was no gravy, I had to steal Siang Leng’s
Anyway that day earlier I already decided I must have lamb for the lunch, so my choice would be either lamb shank or lamb chop only. Now think back I should have ordered the lamb shank lol.
Siang Leng’s order, German minced pork served with salad and mashed potato. The gravy is super nice and went soooo well with my lamb chop.. I can still remember her first reaction after tasting it.. “Wah, so nice laaaaaah!”
My mom ordered German pork sausage, which is also served along with mashed potato and salad. The sausage is almost thrice the normal thickness of a normal sausage, and tasted superb. The meat is very tender unlike normal hotdogs which are soft. This is a must try if in Ingolf’s Kneipe, it costs only less than RM12.
My brother and father ordered the same dish, chicken (with mushroom sauce?) but different parts. You can choose either chicken breast or drumstick, but give me drumstick anytime!
For dessert we had Julian’s dark chocolate mousse. Don’t mistake it is like ice-cream because it is not cold at all and had creamy butter like texture. If you love chocolate you’d definitely love this one
Ingolf’s Kneipe is located at Tanjung Bungah, right opposite Conthorpe Orchid Hotel Penang Chinese Swimming Club. There is a winding road leading to the restaurant on your left just after the petrol station along the way to Batu Ferringhi.
With all the food we ordered, the bill was only around RM76, and everyone gets a free glass of iced lemon tea. I highly recommend this restaurant for Western food with some German touch. Besides the environment here is relaxed and cozy, the perfect place to wind down and have dinner after work. Prior reservation is advised.

Just wondering..i heard they say the staff there are rude..But they will treat u super nice if u are ang moh..is it true?
yni – I think all restaurants will treat ang moh better, won’t you if you own one?
But they weren’t rude to us when we went there.. The service was normal, nothing out of the ordinary. They were very very busy due to the number of guests though
about 2 years ago
The staff were OK.
Althought… I believe all Penangites are generally rude… IMHO. Hahahahaha~

erm, a few friends and i want to go there for dinner this weekend, my friend tried to call to make a booking. before she can give her name and phone number, the waiter just cut her off. she had to call back to leave her name and number. so we wonder should we still go for dinner this weekend..
vkeong,
actually, i treat ang moh worse. i love my fellow malaysian! =) anyway, thanks for the gorgeous photos
about 2 years ago
xweing, lol I can’t really agree with your statement, it’d be shooting my own foot. Penang drivers are a terror though
yni, Maybe it’s just one particular staff.. I called to ask their restaurant location before I went too.. They were quite helpful, giving me the full directions
about 2 years ago
i hope so..will pray hard the waiters will treat us well, so my trip to penang all the way from melaka, will not be a bad experience.. ^_^
about 2 years ago
yni, why pray? It is their duty to serve customers well. If you are not happy with their services, voice up your dissatisfactions. I went to a rather famous restaurant once and had their mix grill that cost RM35++. The lamb stinks and spoiled the whole dish. When I complained to the waiters they only offer to reduce 20%, but when I brought the matter to the manager, he apologized and offered not to charge the mix grill on the bill.
It may be due to he thought I am a reporter or something (coz I carry a big camera everywhere I go) so he acted like that. But the main point is that you must use your right as a consumer well
If you do not let the management know their staff is rude, they won’t improve

Hei there, i think the right way to make a complain if you really think it’s not fair is simply just ask the waiter to call his/her manager. Then from there proceed with your complain and if still not satisfied with the feedback they are giving, then probably ask who is the next highest or maybe the owner of the place. If this is not effective, then go to the Consumer Association and place a complaint(or be a little childish and write a whole BLOG about it)
Cheers ppl!

Your blog is great! Keep it up! Talking about German cuisine, there is one in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur. The food is really good and reasonably priced. The restaurant name is STADT GERMAN CUISINE & BISTRO, located backend of HSBC Bank, behind Carrefour (Kepong). Try the food and let us know your view.

Khor, thanks for the recommendation. I will definitely try it when I am in Kepong, my GF is from there hehe

vkeong,
I agreed with you about the food in ingolf’s. There is another eatery called bistro @ Hardwicke in Penang. It’s located between Northam Tower at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah. It’s a bungalow style bistro. Cozy and friendly staff. No matter you are local or ang moh, they treat you equally. Don’t get cheated by the interior design because previously they are fine dining and now they changed the concept into bistro dining. Price are very reasonable. Apart from the menu, they even have set lunch & dinner that changes every week. Give it a try and let us know your view. I love that place very much.

Hey Vkeong,
i went there with my family for dinner a week after mother’s day. Their staff are really RUDE in service, asked for order sounds worst then hawsker uncle, serve drink with “flying (throwing) coaster”. And the don’t know what they are serving….geeessss. probably the dinner shift worker are truly bad attitude. i and my husband cant stand the way they served. at the end we didnt voice out, because we were celebrating our mother’s day dinner, they already spoiled our mood.
anyway, we are abit dissapointed beacuse they aint fully cater german cuisine, and the menu served less then half german food. a german restaurant wihout focused on their cuisine? sounds funny. Pork knucle? only available on wednesday…german sausages? took stock from dealer…they have no specialty…..cannot tahan.
wont go there again event the only german restaurant in penang. (as i know)
Is there any good german food in penang? pls tell meeeeee……pls
vk: Sorry I don’t know
their service so bad already? I heard some people getting good service, and some getting bad service.. i think depends on the occasion.. let’s see if i can forward this complaint to them.. they must know about the staff’s bad attitude!

VK,
GOSH!! why do they close for LUNCH!! Plzzzzz Open!
I was a regular when they opened for lunch last year, went there about 3-4 times a week, food was gorgeous and very reasonable & no complains on the service so far. didn’t recall they ever serve lambshank during lunch as it was only specifly on dinnertime..hmmmm. .
Was there on Mother’s Day dinner,I wld say the staffs were rather efficient that nite. The only thing i wld complain is that the portion is way to big for me. The main dish took awhile to come but it was understandable as the restaurant was packed. Other than that everything turned up pretty good. Looking forward dinning there again on Fathers Day!!

I am a long term customer of Ingolf’s. This German restaurant offers superb value for money! The quality of the food has never disappointed me and again and again, I enjoy the cozy atmosphere, the cool beer and the rich choice of excellent dishes prepared by Chef Julian. Recently Ingolf has opened an additional section for non-smokers, as the original space is normally fully occupied. Ingolf and Julian have run Ingolf’s Kneipe for 10 years and what demonstrates better that customers are satisfied with the quality and volume of food, the cozy atmosphere and the service by his staff.
In response to the comments of June 5 by gill gill, I would like to state that also restaurant customers can occasionally be very rude and should not be surprised to receive a less than satisfying service. During the many times I visited Ingolf’s Kneipe I have never seen any “flying coasters” or otherwise rude behavior of the waiters.
Apparently gill gill has not been in Germany, where the majority of small restaurants (Kneipe) source from suppliers. What makes the difference between a good and mediocre restaurant is the PREPARATION of the dishes from these sourced ingredients, and in my view, Ingolf’s Kneipe ranks high in the group of good restaurants.
I disagree with the writer! Many dishes in Ingolf’s Kneipe are home-made e.g. Goulash soup (you don’t find any better in Penang), the unique Pork Knuckle, Pork Goulash, Beef and Pork Patties, Jaegerschnitzel, Beef Rolls and Chicken Meat Loaf, just to mention a few. And don’t forget all of his tasty sauces! All Home-Made and all German!
As in politics, where there should be an opposition party, Ingolf’s Kneipe cannot have only friends and gill gill has her free choice to find another restaurant and continue nagging about that…
Signed, another regular and satisfied customer of Ingolf’s Kneipe

I have always been a regular at Ingolfs, what I have to say is the food is one of the best in penang. Its purely original german cuisine and my husband and i never fail to be there during the weekend , though I live in another end of the island.
Great compliments to Chef Julian and Chef Ingolf. And please ignore the awful blogs, you are doing great!!
vk: Ms Dora, you are right about every one entitling to their own opinions.. So let Gill Gill’s thoughts be heard
Thank you for your kind comment!

Their service is really bad especially the manager. So rude. I went with my colleagues for a farewell dinner and one came a bit late (we booked from 7.30 to 8.30). We he asked for menu, the manager rudely said ‘I need my table back at 8.30pm’
I went there again last week for my birthday. My friend booked for 8 people and 11 people turned up. The table is quite small even for 8 so we asked whether we can have a table top. The manager acted busy and only answered us after a few minutes. At first he said not enough waiter to carry out the table top and we said we can carry cause got a few guys in our group but later he said too many customers. He didn’t want to disturb other customers. That’s really a lousy reason. We were so pissed off and went to the restaurant beside instead (bulgarian restaurant). The lady boss is really nice. Cause it was last minute and so many of us, she still manage to get us a big table.

What good German food? You call this food? My family & I ordered the German Butcher Platter for RM 44.90 per plate. What was on it? 3 sausages, 1 slice of luncheon meat from the can, frozen ham from plastic packs, 2 miserable meat balls & 2 frozen hash browns.
WHAT CAN YOU SAY, AN ANG-MOH CANNOT POSSIBLY MAKE WANTAN MEE/HOKKIEN MEE & CHAR KUEY TEOW PROPERLY RIGHT?
GILL GILL you are so ignorant! You obviously do not anything you are talking about or worst you ARE related to the owner.
EVERYTHING TEHRE IS FROZEN DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go to Cold Storage and look for the Packed Ham, the sausages, go and look for meat wholesellers (selling frozen food ) like POK BROTHERS for instance……you can find the sausages, hash browns (which they call potato cake) …………………………………………….
You are so ignorant you should not even be allowed to write anything here.
Give me a break………………people like you really exist???

TO SHIRYN,
I AM INGOLF, REGARDING YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT GERMAN FOOD.
OUR BUTCHERPLATTER CONSISTS OF: ONE PIECE OF GERMAN PORKSAUSAGE(YOU CANNOT BUY AT COLD STORAGE!!!) ONE PIECE OF SMOKED COUNTRY SAUSAGE AND ONE PIECE OF CHICKENSAUSAGE, AS WELL NOT AVAILABLE AT COLD STORAGE OR ANY OTHER SUPERMARKET IN PENANG!!! THE PIECE OF “CANNED LUNCHEONMEAT” WAS A BAKED CHICKENMEATLOAF! AS WELL THERE ARE TWO SMALL PIECES OF PORKMEATBALLS, TWO SLICES OF GRILLED HAM, TWO GRILLED PORKBACONRASHERS AND TWO CHICKENCHIPOLATAS, SIDE DISHES ARE: APLATE OF GERMAN SAUERKRAUT, MASHED POTATOES AND HOMEMADE ONIONSAUCE, AS WELL AS TWO PIECES OF EUROPEAN POTATOCAKES NOT HASHED BROWNS!!! THESE POTATOCAKES ARE SEASONED WITH HERBS AND ONIONS, HASHED BROWNS ARE JUST SHREDDED POTATOES.
BY THE WAY: EVERY K0AY TEOW STALL BUYS THEIR NOODLES FROM THE FACTORY, YOU CONDEMN THIS STALLS AS WELL BECAUSE THEY BUY THEIR PRODUCTS?
JUST FOR YOUR INFO I WAS THE EXECUTIVE CHEF AT BEACH GARDEN RESORT IN LANGKAWI FROM 1996 TO 1998.

Argument over comments on food? :s Been to Ingolf’s a couple of times. Food is good albeit a bit salty for my taste but it’s not as horrible as commented. Btw, do you seriously think rumors wouldn’t spread by now if the food is frozen or canned food? The waiters or waitresses who seen it would have done so for your part.
Nobody likes to be cheated after paying for their food. I used to work in Secret Recipe, and i don’t encourage ppl to go there because it’s not worth the price.

We are there 3 weeks ago. The staff there were super rude. They made mistakes to serve our food to other tables for more than 10 minutes and just throw all the food to our table without even a single apologies. Banned that place forever.
I am a regular there, the service may not be a 100 % customer satisfactory, i have to agree, despite that many people still go there. Why? Because the food is really good and value for money and there isnt a 10% service charge. The only problem is, its difficult to get a group seating during the weekends and festive holidays.

Shiryn,
For your information, as you said if everything you can get in cold storage, then i think you can also get the hokkien mee, wan tan mee’s ingredients from every market, right? But do you really think that you know how to cook it? Please look before you leap. Thanks.

I WONDER HOW THE WEBSITE MODERATOR COULD LET YOUR COMMENTS PASS???
THANK YOU AGAIN “DEFAULT” FOR DEFENDING OUR LITTLE RESTAURANT.

Service is horrible!! Went there on a Saturday night. The restaurant was busy but not THAT busy. There were still empty tables available. We patiently waited to be seated. NO ONE came to greet us or bring us to our table. We were TOATLLY IGNORED by the waiters. We then looked for a table on our own. We sat next to a s**t-for-brains couple who were smoking. There were children around and they were smoking in an air-conditioned restaurant. The staff did nothing. Isn’t smoking in an air-conditioned restaurant forbidden? We then swiched tables away for the smokers. Only then the waiter came over after being told quite loudly by the senior waiter that the table we were sitting was reserved. There was no sign on the table indicating that the table was reserved. Naturally we spewed on the waiter. Then we walked out. I am NEVER going to this resuatrant again. Strictly for those who love being ignored and ill-treated by waiters.
TO TEDDY, YOU SHOULD NOT SIT DOWN ON EMPTY TABLES EVEN IF THERE IS NO RESERVED SIGN ON IT!!! ALWAYS WAIT FOR THE STAFF TO SHOW YOU AN AVAILABLE TABLE. FRIDAYS, SATURDAYS WE ARE ALWAYS FULLY BOOKED.
EVEN AT FASTFOOD OUTLETS SOMEONE HAS TO WAIT AT TIMES!!! PLEASE BE INFORMED THAT THE LOWER LEVEL OF MY RESTAURANT IS AN OPEN DOOR AREA, WHERE SMOKING IS ALLOWED, OUR UPPER LEVEL ON THE FIRST FLOOR IS A NON-SMOKING AREA!!!!!!!!!!
THERE IS TOTALLY NO NEED TO BE SO STUFFED UP AGAINST MY STAFF. THANK YOU FOR NOT COMING BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! INGOLF

Hi, I think you should not use capital to type as a common courtesy, it gives an impression that you are shouting
Thank you
whoa, although there is criticism, but you shouldn’t shout at people. That is a bit rude. In the food and services line,we should always accept comments and improved the staffs if there is bad comments on the staffs. No matter how good is the food, bad services will always decreased the interest of people come to dine in. I read comments from blogs on your restaurant’s services. So I went to see myself today, at 1st your staff didn’t attend me when I came in, so I approached them for a seat. Services of serving were normal. Maybe you can improved your staff’s attitude toward the customer when customer come in. Example, the waiters can ask new came in customers to wait a while while he is busying serving dishes. That will improved the services then. Just a comment by me, you can ignored if you don’t like.:)
I totally agree with your comments milkgirl. It is rude to shout even if we feel that what is being said is totally unjustified. This blog gives valuable feedback to the owner and interested parties as to the quality of food and services provided. If it is offensive just don’t read it and be riled by its content. It is pretty clear from the postings above that the food may be pretty decent but there is an issue about the service provided. The first time I went, my wife and I was asked to sit under a staircase when there were many empty tables around. The waiter attending to us was impolite to say the least and adamant that we follow his ‘instructions’ and sit in this confined space even though we requested to be sitted in one of the MANY empty tables around. No reason was offered. This was lunch not dinner. Suffice to say, we left. Now, how the owners deal with this is entirely up to them. They may be combative/defensive and say “I don’t give a damn as my business is still good and the crowds are still coming” and type everything in caps OR they can talk to their staff and try to improve on the service provided and see their business bloom and prosper. At the end of the day, is it just dollars and cents that matter? If so, then say it out loud so that people may be sufficiently warned. What I do not appreciated are charlatans in the service industry who are less than civil, boorish and arrogant when we are the paying customers who basically go to a restaurant such as this in anticipation of a nice meal. Nobody in their right mind goes for lunch/dinner just to pick a quarrel or to be nasty to the people they meet. We most certainly do not need to be insulted by ill mannered staff or owner(s) who do no credit to the fine cuisine or restaurant they purportedly serve. In this respect, you should shape up or ship out.
