Ribs BarBQue Restaurant - Best Ribs in Town

December 20, 2007

Ribs-BarBQue-Restaurant

There’s a hidden gem along Jalan Burma in Penang. A gem so well hidden one wouldn’t be able to notice if it weren’t for friends and food blogs’ recommendations. Ribs BarBQue Restaurant is located just beside Penang Plaza (the one with Giant) on a small corner, that’s why it’s so hard to spot it. New World Park, Giant or Netcity are more attractive to those who travel along Jalan Burma.

ribs-restaurant

The restaurant has a nice ambiance and very suitable for all types of occasions. May it be a date, birthday dinner or a family outing. If you like wines then you’d pleased to know they have a wine cellar and quite a number of house wines to choose from. But free iced plain water for me thanks! I have learnt to not order drinks from Western restaurants because they are always overpriced.. I’d rather spend the money on food instead.

potato-skin

They have a variety of appetizers like nachos, salad, burritos.. But we settled for Potato Skin which turned out fantastic! It was really surprising how good potato skin could taste! It was a clever dish too, they use the potato to make mashed potatoes and come up with a new dish with the leftover skins. The potato skins are first deep fried until crunchy, then baked with generous amount of cheddar cheese. Then dip into mayonnaise. Or was it tartar sauce? I forgot lol. Anyway it was damn best la.

pork-ribs-and-lamb

Pork ribs are Ribs’ specialty so it’d be silly not to order it. The barbecued pork ribs with lamb consists of two huge pork ribs and two pieces of lamb chops. The ribs’ meat is so tender you can even suck them out from the bones. Some parts of the lamb was slightly burnt but still very nice. For ribs orders, you may choose two out of the four available side dishes. The prices for the main courses are reasonable given the food’s big proportions. Very highly recommended and next time I will order solely ribs only set. Yummmm!

I managed to try it out last night. To be honest, it didn’t manage to impress that much.
First, the menu they used are in coloured plain paper with staples clipping together, no hardcover to hold it. Just staples…
I mean, for such a higher-than-normal price offered in the menu, they should serve the customers with more appropriate menu as this is the first thing the customers will perceive.
Flipping through the paper menu, the drinks are extremely over priced. Eg. a Coke for RM6…and no free-flows! I’ve decided to order a bottle of Carlsberg @ RM9.
Next, the mushroom soup for RM7.80 with a tiny piece of garlic bread. I think for such a price I would rather go to TGIF (with almost the same price for a cup) or Fatty Loh’s Western Food at half of the price. And the taste…nothing special and such a small portion.
For the main course, I tried the BBQ Ribs (4 pieces). They have rubbed in too much BBQ sauce and I think there’s nothing so special about the sauce. It can be easily purchased from any supermarkets. Nothing too special about the ribs either, but not too bad at all, at a price of RM28.
My gf ordered BBQ Chicken @ RM20.90. It’s a half-chicken and price is reasonable. But it taste exactly the same like the Ribs I’ve taken, except that it’s chicken.
Each of us get to choose 2 complimentary side dishes valued at RM3.50 per bowl. Again, nothing so special about that.
Environment-wise, the restaurant plays music from Mix.FM, doesn’t suit the ambience at all…
On a Saturday night, they only have one waiter serving. However we still can see the owner helping out as well. Maybe it’s not too packed on Saturday nights.

Totally agree with Steve Goh. The drinks is very much over priced and the food is nothing to shout about. The worse was the waitress and the service we got. I was there with my gal friends over Christmas. We went in with a jolly mood expecting to have a good time of celebration but we came out very much deflated.
First of all, they had given the wrong impression about their X’mas dinner package, the package which I made the reservations for 2 days prior to the evening was no longer valid. This was only told to us when we sat down to order. After complaints were made, the manager decided to give a 20% discount, which they advertised in the local daily that diners were supposed to get on a Thursday dine-in. We were there on a Thursday. So, she didn’t really do us any favours!! The waitress who served us was dressed in casual t-shirt, she had such a sullen face that it dampen our X’mas spirits. One would have thought that for the classy price which we were paying, at least we are entitled better table manners from the staff. Good money was paid to very bad service. They have lost 12 very valuable customers…

Still rmbr try these during my USM days, sometime in 2005 or 2006. Read bout this in Friday Metro edition of The Star. They had set lunches back then, still rmbr the decor was special, simple, with chessboard like floor tiles. Foodwise, nothing to shout about, though we did not try the ribs back then, premium price ma, students only, mana boleh? :)

ya, went there too 2 years ago, must say that it was disappointing. don’t think the ribs were barbecued, at least not the ones i had, it tasted like boiled, and then plastered with bbq sauce, too much, and then heated in the oven or something. service was also bad back then, made you feel like it’s a high class place and what on earth are you doing there, or maybe it was the way i dressed. they’re part of the uob credit card restaurant, whereby if you used your card, you’re entitled to a discount, but these weren’t made known either, i would have paid cash had i not spotted the uob logo and enquired about them. another friend confirmed an almost similar experience and vowed never to return.

anyone knows of a decent ribs place in penang?
