Satay Celup @ Ban Lee Siang, Jalan Ong Kim Wee Melaka
May 6th
Have you heard of Satay Celup before? It’s a dish where raw or semi-cooked food like seafood, meat and vegetables on skewers are dunked into a boiling pot of diluted satay sauce. Imagine having steamboat with the soup substituted with satay sauce.
I believe Satay Celup is a dish uniquely available only to Melaka and well favored by the Malaccans. Well, there are attempts to introduce this dish to the other states but from what I heard the venture was not successful because the people found it hard to accept.
The concept of Satay Celup could be attributed to being a combination of lok lok and buffet steamboat. With a tray provided by the restaurant, customers would proceed to the huge refrigerators housing the large selection of food on skewers, pick their choices and start dipping away.
I first got to know Satay Celup when I pursued my studies in MMU Melaka. And it’s a shame that I have never tried, or worse still, never even seen it in my entire year spent in Melaka lol. It’s a pity I was not adventurous enough in my younger days, hence missing out on many stuff.
So in my last trip to Melaka I made it a point that I simply had to try Satay Celup, no matter what. Even dunking 1 skewer would suffice. Among the many Satay Celup restaurants Ban Lee Siang was our choice because of the good reviews I read about it, and Jalan Ong Kim Wee where it is situated was reasonably near to our hotel too. Mee Tuaran Goreng @ Seng Hing Restaurant, Kota Kinabalu
May 4th
Mee Tuaran, a special kind of fried noodle has always been the hawker food I wanted to try in Sabah. To me, this hawker dish’s reputation in Sabah is equivalent to Char Koay Teow in Penang, or Kolo Mee in Sarawak. But since I wasn’t able to go all the way to Tuaran to try the authentic ones, I had to settle for those in Kota Kinabalu – hoping that they would be as good.
Seng Hing Restaurant at Sinsuran 2 was recommended by the locals for their Mee Tuaran Goreng (Fried Mee Tuaran) and Tom Yam Noodles. Lucky for us, the coffee shop was only 5 minutes’ walk away from our hotel so we had our breakfast there before heading to Gaya Street’s Sunday Market.
The Mee Tuaran @ RM5 (if not mistaken) was worth my long anticipation. I don’t know the exact words to describe it but it tasted somewhere between Wantan Mee (of the light soya sauce) and Sarawak Kolo Mee. The noodles was springy, with generous toppings of roasted pork and slices of fried egg rolls (thanks to the clarification of a Sabahan, I thought they were fish cakes initially) Click here to continue reading >
Gai Wo Bao @ Clan Dim Sum Restaurant, Sri Petaling
May 2nd
Hi guys do you notice something new on my blog’s sidebar? There’s a list of food I have yet to blog about, which has been accumulating since last year lol. A rough estimate would be 50 posts, and that number excludes my travel related posts to Melaka, Cameron Highlands and Sabah omg.
Based on my current update frequency, the backlog of posts would take at least 5 months to clear lol. Anyway, I was at Clan Restaurant, Sri Petaling many months ago to try their famous Gai Wo Bao, which translates to ‘Chicken Nest Bun’.
I have tried Gai Wo Bao in the other dim sum restaurants nearby and found it to be so-so only. And since it is said that Clan Restaurant is the originator of this bun’s recipe, I had pretty high expectations. In fact, the main reason I went to Clan Restaurant was to try the Gai Wo Bao only.
