Penang Prawn Mee @ O & S Coffee Shop, Taman Paramount
After trying Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodle, I have concluded that although it is very good and also impressive with the huge tiger prawns, taste wise the best ones are still in Malaysia – specifically Penang.
Unfortunately due to my current circumstances I seldom step into Penang island anymore, unless I am taking a flight home lah lol. But then again, you don’t have to travel all the way to Penang to have a taste of great Prawn Mee (or what is more commonly known as Hokkien Mee to us).
At Taman Paramount Petaling Jaya there’s already an impressive prawn noodle stall that can beat most of the Penang ones. I was at KL three weeks ago to meet up with some friends and we had our lunch at O & S Coffee Shop.
Besides Penang prawn noodle, you can also find quite a number of Penang styled hawker food like Chee Cheong Fun served with thick shrimp paste, Penang Char Koay Teow and Lor Bak. It is an ideal place for any Penangites to cure their “foodsickness”.
As an effort to match Wah Kee’s $10 premium big prawn noodles in terms of ingredients, I ordered a bowl with extra pork ribs and prawns at RM8, which can be considered very premium even for KL standard. A quick sip of the intense flavored soup was all needed to reaffirm my thought earlier.
The soup on its own was pretty awesome already, and with the chili paste added it got the much desired kick that makes you keep going and wanting more, kinda addictive. This was something that lacked in Wah Kee’s prawn noodle, even though their soup is truly sweet and brimming with prawn flavor.
I also missed Penang Char Koay Teow so I had a plate on top of the prawn noodle. Taste wise it’s almost there, main problem is lacking in ‘wok hei’. Suffice to say my craving was not fulfilled lol. But for Klang Valley standard, it is good enough so I am pretty OK with them bearing the Penang word in their stall name hehe.
Anyway, I will be at Penang this weekend for the Christmas holidays so I am keeping my fingers crossed I have the time to look for one of the best Penang Hokkien Mee. This is something I wanted to do for a long time, but never had the luxury of time to do it.

O&S Restoran in Paramount is one of the best in town, most of the stalls serve delicious food. I like most is the Penang Chee Cheong Fun sometimes it’s better than a lot of stalls in Penang. Prawn mee is a bit little fake, to sweet too be true. Still like the one in Tmn Tun.

Nothing really beats Penang’s true authentic version, I’d say. Especially the CKT.

Yeah, I heard it’s something about the flat noodles and water source in Penang, that cannot be replicated anywhere else.

Ever since yr previous blog on this OS prawn mee couple mths before, I have visited the stall every Sat without fail. It,s really additive. The pork ribs are so tender n juicy. It,s impossible to find another as good in whole klang Valley. A little pricey but worth every sen. But the CKT is a let down.

There’s another coffeshop that sells a prawn mee similar to this, it’s in Bandar Sri Damansara, near Kepong. If you’re interested vkeong, I can lead you there.

I am a regular in O&S many years back… He knows me by name! Indeed the prawn mee is one of the best! even better then many stalls in Penang. There was one time he told me he is excited cause there is some reporters frm some local press coming to interview him
Lately i notice that i would get darn thristy after a bowl. I believe that is MSG working.
Overall, i would say that this prawn mee is one of the best i hv tasted so far… even better then the ones in BM & PG. Go for it !

I went to O& S coffee shop on 2nd Jan 2010 morning to try the prawn mee. However very disappointed bcos the taste is bland.
VKeong, u should try one stall in Kepong Baru,KL coffee shop called Fatty Sang. Stall run by husband & wife. Costs only RM4 (served with kangkung, boiled egg, prawns). The stall also sells curry laksa also RM4 (served with long beans, cockles, tau pok, curry chicken, fried gu pei(pig skin).Very nice
