The Sire Museum Restaurant – Great Ambiance, Disappointing Food
| Share |
The Sire Museum Restaurant is a unique and beautiful museum cum restaurant serving Western dishes, which was previously the home of Yeap Chor Ee, one of Penang‘s greatest philanthropists.
There are tonnes of articles out there singing praises about The Sire, calling it a must visit restaurant serving delicious food in Penang. This prompted me to visit it last weekend, with high hopes and expectations. While I do agree The Sire’s ambiance is truly mesmerizing, the food was the opposite and failed to impress – like totally.
The appetizers – some cheese baked baguette.
The food’s presentation here is top class for sure, I won’t deny that. The chef definitely have the skills to present the food so nicely that the diners would feel as though they are having fine dining food.
Pan-Sealed Red Snapper @ RM29.80. The fish was not fresh and had a mushy texture. Even though the sauce was not bad having a zesty orange flavor, the dish failed in overall due to the unfresh fish. Even the sides (mashed potato and vegetable) were bad, the standard is just not there.
Despite being called Grilled Lemon Grass Chicken @ RM32.80, it did not have the tiniest hint of lemongrass flavor. It was very bland tasting and disappointing. The disappointment was greater when the dish looked so promisingly delicious.
The only consolation that night was my Roasted Lamb Chop @ RM32.80. For me, it was the only dish that was worth recommending among our orders. The portion was satisfying because 3 pieces of meaty Australian lamb chop were given, and the meat’s seasoning hit the spot nicely – good enough to be eaten on its own without the accompanying sauces.
The lamb chops were cooked medium well but still managed to taste tender, juicy and retaining some of their original gamey flavor. Luckily this turned out good, preventing a complete disastrous meal.
If you are wondering, the museum is just next door to the dining area. Photography is prohibited here but I don’t think it was really enforced.
If you are looking for a restaurant with great ambiance but don’t mind expensive and unimpressive food, then you could give The Sire a try. But who am I kidding here? In the end the most important thing for a restaurant is to dish out tasty food that would leave the customers satisfied. I am sure there is a restaurant in Penang that could be both beautiful and serve great food as well.

I have been there ~ 3 times, only the first time (2008) was impressed.
My disappointing meals at Sire :
1) 2009 CNY – a group of us about 10 persons went and were seated upstair (golden room) and all of us were disappointed on the food. I didn’t even want to waste my time blogging it out.
2) 2009 New Year http://www.cariso.net/2009/01/disappointing-lunch-the-sire
2008 is the only impressive one.

I think you should blog about your 2nd experience. It’s unhealthy for everyone to blog only about good experiences, there should be an awareness about restaurants that went wrong

Maybe they had their chef changed. That is why the food got worse.
I don’t think it’s worth the money that we are paying. I would rather pay more for a delicious plate of meal rather than a good looking plate.
Disappointing really….

Fantastic ambience, pathetic food? How many cafes/bistros/restaurants emphasize on the sleazy/glitzy factor more than the quality of the food? MANY.
Anyway, I think there’s a minor typo for the red snapper dish.

Hi j2kfm, the typo you mentioned is it the “pan-sealed”? I also thought it should be pan-seared.. but apparently it was listed as “pan-sealed” so I just followed lol.
