Champ’s Bistro King Kong Prawn Mee @ Centrepoint, Bandar Utama
Oct 14th
It’s pretty unusual to find lard in Prawn Mee but if you fancy heapful of these sinful stuff you could find it at Champ’s Bistro, Centrepoint Bandar Utama. The Prawn Mee here is also reputed to be one of the most expensive due to its huge serving of pork ribs and ‘King Kong‘ sized prawns.
They call it the ‘Damn Shiok Hokkien Prawn Mee‘, priced at RM20.90 a bowl. And despite being shown in the menu as having three prawns, it only came with only two – huge and fresh nonetheless. Soup is ‘shiok’ alright, much credit to MSG. The chili paste adds a much welcomed kick to the noodles so I suggest you to double the dose.
Well, I don’t know whether I should be surprised, the addition of lard did make the noodles more delicious by enhancing the taste and aroma of the soup. Pork ribs were meaty but some parts felt a bit tough.
Brilliant Nasi Lemak House – Nice and Cheap Nasi Lemak @ Kepong
Oct 11th
I am pleased to announce there is a new place for nice and cheap nasi lemak. Cheap if you come during weekdays after 3:15pm; affordable if you come any other time. I use the word cheap because for a plate of nasi lemak with meat or seafood and a huge glass of drink, it’s only RM5.80 and best of all, the price is nett! No annoying service charge or government tax are added.
The place is called Brilliant Nasi Lemak House located at the shop lots next to Carrefour Kepong. The shop is quite new with a cafe like environment, clean and simple suited for a quick satisfying meal. Actually I only got to know this place after SL had her lunch here once. Her feedback about their nasi lemak was positive hence our second visit.
I actually aimed for their Nasi Lemak with Nyonya Curry Chicken but I guess my luck ran out, they had everything else but this since it was near their closing time. So I had their Brilliant Nasi Lemak set instead at a much higher price @ RM16.80 that comes with a Brilliant Dessert (something like Leng Chee Kang)
Go-Gung Korean Restaurant @ Mid Valley Gardens
Oct 9th
Firstly just let me say that I am not a fan of Korean food whatsoever. The last time I had Korean food was at Daorae and it was not an experience I would like to remember nor looking forward to repeat.
I am very very sure I am not the only person who finds Korean cuisine to be an acquired taste, may I even say weird? This holds especially true for me when it comes to the extremely sourish and spicy kimchi. Maybe because I went to the wrong restaurant for Korean food, or maybe it was the chef’s problem for not being able to churn out the same authentic taste that everyone loves back in Korea. I don’t know and who am I to comment anyway?
Recently I had lunch at Go-Gung Korean Restaurant at Mid Vally The Gardens hoping it would change my perception towards Korean food. I had this expectation because from the info I gather from friends and blogs, it is said to be one of the good ones albeit pricey.
For a normal working day lunch I am not prepared to fork out fifty to hundreds for a main course so I simply had their set lunch, priced in the region of RM18-RM25. Most of them come with soup, unlimited side dishes, and Pajeon (Korean scallion pancake) Honestly speaking only a few side dishes tasted acceptable for me like salad and that vege thingy with anchovies, the rest was nothing great.
Sky Emperor Chicken Feet Koay Teow Soup @ Kimberley Street
Oct 6th
Kimberly Street (Lebuh Kimberly) is one of the best spots in Penang to enjoy hawker food in the evening. In this street alone there are four ‘Kings’ of food, a title given to the hawkers by some TV show. The Four Heavenly Kings (yeah, same title as that 4 singers in Hong Kong in the 90s) are: Char Koay Teow stall in front of Sin Guat Keong Coffee Shop, Sky Emperor Koay Teow Soup, Koay Chap and the Chinese Dessert shop.
This round, Sky Emperor Koay Teow Soup stall is the one being featured. The nicely stacked braised whole chicken thighs and wings would definitely catch your attention when you walk pass this stall, something that you won’t see in other Koay Teow Soup stalls. It’s pretty obvious these are also their specialties, much better than their Koay Teow, which I find to be above average at best.
Any given person would give these scrumptious drumsticks another look.
