“Meng Kee” Claypot Chicken Rice
Aug 17th
More food from [tag]Kepong[/tag] to introduce~
I had [tag]Claypot Chicken Rice[/tag] 砂煲鸡饭 for lunch before driving back to Penang on Monday. For Malaysians, there’s no need for introduction to this dish, anyway..
Claypot Chicken Rice is usually a dinner dish in Singapore and Malaysia. It is typically served with Chinese sausage and vegetables. More often than not, the rice is cooked in the claypot first and cooked ingredients like diced chicken and chinese sausage are added in later. Some places serve it with dark soya sauce and also dried salted fish. Salted fish, some claim, enhances the taste of the claypot chicken rice. And even where there are no long queues, given the way the dish is prepared, customers have to wait for at least 30 minutes before the dish is ready.
“Meng Kee” 明记 is located along a small lane between an abandoned building (used to be Parkson) and an old cinema in Kepong Baru. The stall is very simple, with 5-6 tables around and a zinc roof as shade. A small pot serving one costs RM4.50, while the bigger port which can serve up to two costs RM8. You can also order “Yau Choi” and soup too. We ordered Siu Bak Choi and Lotus Soup 莲藕汤. I didn’t taste nor taken any photo of the soup as it didn’t look nice. But according to Siang Leng and her family, it was really good! My loss then I guess
The “Yau Choi” tastes good and complements the rice very well. Our bill came to RM22+, RM5+ per person with chicken rice, soup and vege.. I think that’s pretty good value for money if you ask me, especially in KL!
“Delicious” Curry Fish Head
Aug 15th
I posted an entry mentioning a very nice Curry Fish Head stall in [tag]Kepong[/tag] some months ago. Last weekend when I went to Cyberjaya to attend Siang Leng’s convocation, I had the opportunity to enjoy this delicious curry fish head again. This time, I managed to take some pictures of it!
“Delicious” 有余 [tag]Curry Fish Head[/tag] operates in a huge food court in Kepong called “Happy City” 快?城. It is managed by 2 people, a man and a lady. I am not sure of their relationship, but I assume the lady is from China because she has “the slang” when speaking in Mandarin.
So far, every time I go to “Happy City”, the place is full. It has about 20-30 stalls and features a big projector screen showing Astro dramas. Parking is easily available and free just in front of the food court.
The smallest portion cost RM9 exclusive of rice. Although it looks little, it is enough for 2-3 people, costing only RM3-5 per person for a syok meal. Their Curry Fish Head is always cooked upon order, so you can be sured of its freshness. Look at the gravy which was boiling hot when delivered to our table.
The Curry Fish Head sold here uses pretty much the usual ingredients: Fish meat, taufu pok, ladies fingers and long beans. What I like the most is the really rich and thick gravy. The gravy was so nice that I can finish the plate of rice with it LOL. Definitely a must try!
Kepong Dim Sum
Apr 24th
“Dim Sum” – in Chinese meaning “a pinch to the heart” is a variety of dumplings and buns that can be either steamed or fried, normally served along with chinese tea. As the name implies, Dim Sum is to be treated as a light snack rather than a full meal.
Delicious Char Siu Pao, anyone?
Plenty of Siu Mais, who doesn’t love Siu Mai??
I have yet found any recommendable Dim Sum in KL, if you have any suggestions please do write a comment after this post. Few days ago I spent 2 hours driving around Sri Petaling and Bukit Jalil trying to find the 24H Dim Sum restaurant Ji Xian mentioned a few years back. After asking 8 different people, which include 3 Malay apartment guards, an Indian newspaper seller, a Chinese restaurant owner and 3 friends through phone calls, we still couldn’t manage to find that damn place. Really ‘da pai’.
A Dim Sum restaurant in Kepong
In the end gave up finding and ended up eating Char Kueh Teow in Serdang. 1.30 am. Phhhft. -.-
Kepong “Ka Ka” Bak Kut Teh
Apr 24th
Every time I visit [tag]Kepong[/tag] I will notice a lot of people eating in this [tag]Bak Kut Teh[/tag] stall, called Ka Ka Bak Kut Teh. Some forumers at Lowyat.net also recommend this stall for nice BKT, so Siang Leng and I decided to try it(although we just had Klang BKT 4 days ago
)
Even their herbal drink is named “Jia Jia”
If you aren’t a BKT fan like me, try going to the food court opposite(it’s damn big and bright, you can’t miss it) and check out their Curry Fish Head, it’s marvelous. I had it twice already but both times I didn’t bring along the camera.. will blog more about it if I have the opportunity
The place was packed, until the shophouses behind were used to accomodate the customers. See the photos to witness yourself, it was around 7.15 pm that time.
Shown here is only 40% of the customers that night.. so packed
“Ka Ka” BKT
“Zhu Jiao Chu” – Pork Hind cooked with Vinegar(it’s a dish for pregnant women)
Overall the BKT and “Zhu Jiao Chu” we had were so-so, equally tasty as those found in Dengkil, but the Yau Char Kuai is the best, freshly fried and very crunchy.
Nice view of the BKT, the Yau Char Kuai is the best
