BM Best Cendol @ Medan Selera Jalan Danby, Bukit Mertajam
Nov 7th
First, just let me say that Bukit Mertajam has never been famous for cendol. My hometown has some great food like Yam Rice, Duck Egg Char Koay Teow, Laksa, Char Koay Teow, Wantan Mee, Mee Goreng, Koay Teow Soup, Dry Prawn Noodle, Curry Mee, Nasi Lemak and so on. But cendol is definitely out of the list.
But if you are ever in Bukit Mertajam and looking for a cheap and refreshing bowl of cendol, then you must give BM Best Cendol a try. It is located near the town’s wet market along Danby Street, just behind KFC. Click here to continue reading >
Jawi Laksa (Wan Li Laksa) @ Taman Mutiara, Bukit Mertajam
Oct 27th
If you are tired of eating the same old Penang Assam Laksa at all the already renowned places in the island, there is an alternative.
In Jawi (a small town in the mainland side of Penang) there is a famous laksa stall called Wan Li Laksa, or more commonly known as Jawi Laksa. Located next to Jawi’s Tua Pek Kong temple, it is a favorite with the locals as well as the neighboring towns.
As much as I wanted to show the laksa from the original stall, I was just too lazy to drive all the way to Jawi just to have a bowl of it. Another reason is because Wan Li Laksa has a branch in Taman Mutiara, Bukit Mertajam, which is just 5 min away from my house. So why travel so far for the same thing lol. Bee Tin Curry Mee (Chain Ferry Curry Mee) @ Butterworth
Oct 20th
As I know there are two versions of Curry Mee around. One uses slightly sweet and savory coconut milk mainly as the soup base with chili supplied separately, commonly found in Penang.
Another version, which is more common in KL/Ipoh and other places is prepared with curry soup topped with curry chicken resulting in a thicker and spicy broth even without the addition of chili.
If you are a Northern person you would probably dislike the Southern version, and vice versa. It’s a love or hate thing from what I see. Some people claim that since the noodle dish is called Curry Mee, it’s only appropriate that the soup is curry based. Well, me being a lover of both versions, I have to admit I prefer the Northern style more.
Bee Tin Curry Mee at Butterworth is the perfect example of a typical Penang Curry Mee. The soup is a white concoction made mainly of coconut milk, and tastes a little sweet and light on its own.
Ismal Char Koay Teow @ Jalan Bunga Raya, Bukit Mertajam
Oct 13th
Went back to BM recently and had Ismal Char Koay Teow for dinner. It is still RM5 for a plate of Char Koay Teow Special, which comes with extra prawns, cockles and a sunny side up egg.
It still tasted as awesome like usual. But I realized I should have tried the Char Koay Teow in front of Wonderful Supermarket at Alma instead for a change. Sorry to those who have suggested me that place, I simply forgot and will remember to try it on my next trip back home. Click here to continue reading >
