Champ’s Bistro King Kong Prawn Mee @ Centrepoint, Bandar Utama
Oct 14th
It’s pretty unusual to find lard in Prawn Mee but if you fancy heapful of these sinful stuff you could find it at Champ’s Bistro, Centrepoint Bandar Utama. The Prawn Mee here is also reputed to be one of the most expensive due to its huge serving of pork ribs and ‘King Kong‘ sized prawns.
They call it the ‘Damn Shiok Hokkien Prawn Mee‘, priced at RM20.90 a bowl. And despite being shown in the menu as having three prawns, it only came with only two – huge and fresh nonetheless. Soup is ‘shiok’ alright, much credit to MSG. The chili paste adds a much welcomed kick to the noodles so I suggest you to double the dose.
Well, I don’t know whether I should be surprised, the addition of lard did make the noodles more delicious by enhancing the taste and aroma of the soup. Pork ribs were meaty but some parts felt a bit tough.
My Elephant Thai Restaurant by DooDee @ Happy Mansion, Section 17
Oct 4th
Thai food lovers in PJ should have heard of My Elephant already. It is one of the best Thai restaurants in PJ and you would be surprised to find it situated underneath the humble flats of Happy Mansion at Section 17.
For a first timer to My Elephant, skepticism is unavoidable because of the rather dodgy surroundings especially at nights. But allow me to clarify first that the food at My Elephant is great and this restaurant is definitely a keeper.
My first visit to My Elephant was during lunch and we only had a simple meal – one soup plus two dishes. Tom Som @ RM18 (small) is their best-selling soup, which is a clear prepared with Galangal, Lemongrass and Lime so the taste is a appetizingly sourish. Try to think of it as a non-spicy version of Tom Yum, it’s about there actually. You may have it with chicken or fish but the latter is the recommended, which we took.
Gaeng Keow Wan (Thai Green Curry with Seafood) @ RM20. I only have one small problem with this dish which is the amount of seafood given. Well they were two huge and fresh prawns alright, but the rest like squid and fish slices were pretty little for the price paid. The green curry was so delicious I could drink it. I am not kidding here, that’s just how good it was.
Geylang Lor 9 Fresh Frog Porridge @ SS2, PJ
Sep 26th
Geylang is famous (as well as notorious hehe) for a couple of things. In terms of food, Frog Porridge is one of the popular food around here that is greatly enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. So it isn’t surprising that this food managed to venture into neighboring countries. One of the them – Geylang Lor 9 has taken advantage on the food’s popularity and now they have chained restaurants in Indonesia, China, Taiwan and also at SS2, Petaling Jaya.
OK before you go “ewwww, frog legs. yucks” on me, let me just say that frog leg is an absolute delicacy if they are well-prepared to remove any bad smell. Once you get over the mental factor you would certainly appreciate it. The flesh is smooth, tastes sweet and contrary to popular beliefs, no it doesn’t taste like chicken at all.
The plain porridge is available in three sizes S/M/L priced at RM3/4/5 respectively. Taste wise it was nothing really different from any other porridges – plain and regular. You could add some sesame oil or white pepper for extra seasoning if you want but I recommend using the gravy from the frog legs arriving later.
Also, do note the porridge has a very thick texture to the extent of being quite lumpy and gluey. So if this is not the kind of porridge you fancy then you should very well know what to do lah.
Hainan Tea Kopitiam @ SS2, Petaling Jaya
Sep 12th
A few days ago a friend and I were driving around SS2 looking for a place for tea break and noticed a new establishment called Hainan Tea (previously Leo’s Cafe). We took a quick glance at the menu and found some interesting stuff so we decided to give it a try. Plus, the outlet looked pretty cool and cozy.
Although it’s still kinda refreshing albeit weird to see Chee Cheong Fun sold in kopitiam, it is not something new for Hainanese ones. You would have probably seen it before at Hainan Tea Station in Lowyat Plaza.
The Hainan Cheong Fun @ RM3.50 had an appetizing golden-brown appearance largely attributed to the mix of sweet sauce and peanut butter. Honestly I was very skeptical about the taste at first but surprisingly (and luckily) it turned out to be quite OK. Don’t expect silky, openable rice rolls though because they were tightly sealed and lumpy.
Hainan Tea with gula melaka @ RM4.80 (recommended) and Hainan Cham @ RM3.90.
