Let me preface this by saying that I never really saw the appeal of Ah Weng Koh Hainan Tea & Coffee. Before Ah Weng Koh relocated to ICC Pudu, they were one of the hundreds of other food vendors in Imbi Market.
To me, it’s just a regular coffee stall that serves the usual toast, half boiled egg and drinks. Maybe their Hainanese drinks are a bit unique, but there are plenty of coffee shops in town that make equally good Hainanese coffee and tea too.
Their new location in the complex is no doubt cleaner and more comfortable. But it’s a lot noisier now and due to the swelling crowd, you can’t enjoy a peaceful breakfast without having people staring at your table waiting for you to go off.
Plus, get ready to be bumped by the customers and workers alike. If you’re unlucky, you will get spilled by drinks – hopefully not a hot one.
Ordering could be an apprenhensive experience here, as the impatient workers can’t seem to tell the difference between tea and coffee. Regardless of which you specify, you still get coffee. Ah Weng Koh’s Hainanese Coffee @ RM2.40 does have that signature smoothness to it, but flavor wise it’s flat out sweet and lacking in body.
Their signature kaya butter toast (available in buns too) @ RM2.40 was alright. If you enjoy having thick slabs of butter in your toast then you’d definitely enjoy this.
But if I am seriously going to nitpick, the butter should be melted between the toast slices. Maybe the current generation has no idea what a really good toast is and blindly accept whatever is being served to them.
A pair of half boiled eggs @ RM2.20 – not sure how this could go wrong. The quality of the eggs being used is low though, at least at Old Town you get large Omega enriched eggs for almost the same price.
Conclusion: Ah Weng Koh is worth checking out at least once due to the hype surrounding them. Personally, I won’t bother to return because there are many other vendors in the same complex that may deserve the attention more.
