If you know someone who grew up in Kepong in the 80s, ask them if they know about Ah Yee Curry Mee. Chances are they have been eating her food since young.
From what I was told, Ah Yee Curry Mee had a humble beginning as an economy noodle and chee cheong fun stall. Yong tau fu and other noodles were only added as part of her offerings in the later years.
Although popular with the locals, Ah Yee was forced to relocate her stall from the coffee shop she started in because of the owner’s jealousy.
After that, many Kepong folks tried looking for her but without much success. It was until when she setup her own place at ‘wai sek kai’ that her loyal customers were able to find their favorite chee cheong fun again.
Eventually, words started to spread after that and her business grew, even better than when she first started out. If you think about it, it could be a blessing in disguise that the jealous coffee shop owner evicted her stall. Nowadays, she is assisted by her niece who is also poised to take over the business when she retires.
Since my favorite curry mee in Kepong is only a stone’s throw away at Penang Corner, I don’t come here as frequently.
But when I need a good fix of curry chee cheong fun, this is the place to be. The chee cheong fun is prepared with custom made rice noodle rolls that are thinner and smoother, so they would soak up the sauces better.
What makes Ah Yee’s chee cheong fun stand out from the rest is her signature braised mushroom and pork which is used as the default topping. It’s tender, full of flavor and adds a touch of sweetness to complement the curry sauce’s spiciness. For a more filling and satisfying meal, you can also add their homemade yong tau fu @ RM1.30/pc.
Despite not being my favorite, it’s undeniable that the Curry Mee here is delicious. The curry broth is brilliantly rich, creamy and aromatic with coconut milk.
For RM5.50, it comes loaded with chicken slices, pork skin, tofu puff, green beans and cockles. The cockles are large, plump and juicy – and that makes me a happy camper.
Besides chee cheong fun and curry mee, there are a few other noodles available such as prawn mee, chicken hor fun, yee mee, wantan mee and clear noodle soup.
