Bai Wei Cuisine is the latest restaurant to open in Desa Sri Hartamas. After knowing they serve mee pok, we came here immediately the next day to try it out.
Their signature mee pok is RM7.50 a bowl and can be considered reasonably priced for Desa Sri Hartamas area. The sambal is served separately, presumably to let customers mix the appropriate amount into the noodle themselves. Other places usually serve and even mix them together before serving.
As expected, the mee pok is lightly seasoned and the main flavor you get is derived from the pork lard. It kind of bland to be eaten on its own so that’s where the sambal comes in. I have to say the sambal was nicely done with a good balance of sweet and spicy and transformed the noodle from just being ‘OK’ to good.
The Fried Fish Noodle & Chee Cheong Fun @ RM8.50 was just alright. The ‘wok hei’ was present but lacking, and the dish felt too moist for my liking – as in there was a pool of water left on the plate when we were done with it.
We also tried the Canton Noodle with Abalone Sauce @ RM7 which turned out average at best. It tasted too one-dimensional and the sambal just doesn’t go well with the abalone sauce’s sweetness.
The Fried Dumpling @ RM7 looked great on the menu, but it arrived looking like the saddest gyozas we have ever laid our eyes on.
Personally, I was disappointed by their Hainan Tea (RM3.50) which lacked richness and sweetness. While we are encouraged to ask for ‘kurang manis’ when ordering drinks, you should really ask for ‘tambah manis’ here. The Ginger Tea with Glutinous Rice Ball @ RM4.50 was quite awful too.
Based on what we had, safe to say we won’t be returning anytime soon. The delicious sambal was the only thing that saved this meal from being a disaster.
Also, I can’t help but compare Bai Wei Cuisine with Tang Pin Kitchen because their menu is almost like a mirror of each other. Overall, Tang Pin Kitchen is just better in every aspect.
