Sheng Huat is probably the most popular Bak Kut Teh restaurant in Jinjang. Oddly enough, the same restaurant is operated by two different operators who come in between 4pm-8pm and 10pm-2am. The later session is said to be marginally better but the timing is a tad late, so we dropped by to try the noon session first.
Since it’s Jinjang, you can the prices here are a bit lower than the rest of KL. A person’s serving of Bak Kut Teh is RM11 compared to the usual RM13-RM15. As you can see the soup is clear, mildly sweet flavored with added mushrooms.
Multi-layered pork intestine (zhu cheong) is a specialty at Sheng Huat and it’s recommended if you are used to eating offal. This is considered a rare dish and not many food operators are unwilling to prepare due to the amount of work required. Here, it’s thoroughly cleaned and voided of any unpleasant odor. The texture is bouncy and chewy too, nice.
Personally, I felt the highlight of the meal was their braised pork @ RM11.50 per portion. The savory sauce is packed full of flavor and carries a hint of spiciness which makes it appetizing as well. Besides this, another dish worth mentioning is their unique braised pork trotter with sugar cane. If you are interested to try, you need to pre-order it.
Based on what we had, I wouldn’t say the food here (prepared by the noon operator) is fantastic but we weren’t disappointed either. Now, we are looking forward to try the night operator’s version to see if it’s really better as claimed.
