In Melaka there are two well-known places for Char Siew. One of them is at Batu Berendam (Chuen How), which I blogged about not too long ago while the other can be found at Jalan Bunga Raya‘s food court. Luckily both of them open at different times so you could actually try both of them in the same day if you wish.
The Jalan Bunga Raya one is only open for lunch and most of the customers are here to take away. You can also opt to eat at the food court but do note that the seats are rather limited. But for some, they don’t even mind sitting right in front of the stall where the chopping of all the roast meat takes place. It could be a an interesting experience if you ask me. Anyway if you are eating in, please just grab a seat immediately and you will be served quickly. You only need to queue if you are taking away.
The Char Siew here is done very similarly to the Chuen How’s, in which they look and taste like strips of ‘bakkwa’ (Chinese pork jerky – ‘yuk gon’) The thing about this variation of Char Siew is that they usually have a nice distribution of fat and meat, tastes more tender and less guilt in each bite. Unless, of course, if you requested for the fattier cuts. Besides roast meat you will also find a number of side dishes here, albeit not as many choices as Chuen How. From what I see the french beans and fried eggs are two of the more popular choices among the customers.
When compared, I find both the Char Siew here and at Chuen How are equally good but my preference leans towards the former – simply because their Char Siew sauce is thicker and more flavorful. So ultimately, my recommendation is still to go for Chuen How. But if you are not familiar with areas outside the town center then you might want to try this instead.
Oh and by the way, avoid all the food sold here at night namely the famous but super duper overrated Oh Chien and Wantan Mee. Both
also not for human eat oneare also terrible.
