CupoNation, the global savings portal conducted an analysis about the consumption behavior of Malaysians last month. The results are displayed in an interactive infographic and it shows the average amount of money spent by Malaysians in main expenditure categories. But how do both Malaysian and Singaporean’s consumption behavor compare to each other? Let’s find out in the following.

Beer and Wine in Singapore and Malaysia
Beer and wine consumption is nearly the same in both countries, but Malaysians still pay less (RM 0.70/day) for the same amount of beer and wine compared to Singaporeans (S$0.41 or RM 1.23/day). On average, the cost of a can of domestic beer in Malaysia is RM 11 while a bottle of wine costs RM 50. The prices are considered pretty high compared to the those in Europe. But even with the towering price of alcohols, Malaysia is reputed to be the 10th largest consumer of alcohol in the world.

Malaysians drink more coffee but pay less per day
Malaysians love their coffee and it shows. The average Malaysian consumes 3 times more coffee, but Singaporeans still end up paying 40% more (S$5.47 or RM 16.25) compared to Malaysians (RM 9.79) for every cup of coffee.

Do Malaysians smoke more cigarettes than Singaporeans?
On average, Malaysians smoke a total of 7.45 cigarettes per day. That is almost 4 times more than a Singaporean smoker who smokes only 2 cigarettes per day. But Singaporeans still end up spending more per cigarette (S$0.65 or RM 1.93) compared to Malaysians (RM 0.82).

Restaurants
Singaporeans pay slightly more (S$8.88 or RM 26.50/day) compared to Malaysians (RM 23.33/day) when it comes to eating out in restaurants. People of both nations share the same love for seafood, mainly due to the cultural and geographical similarities.

Do Malaysians consume more electricity?
Absolutely yes. Malaysians Consume 4 times less petrol (0.57L/day), compared to Singaporeans (4.72L/day). And with electricity, Malaysians use relatively less electricity (8.36 kWh/day), compared to Singapore (23 kWh/day).

From the results it is clear that Malaysians enjoy cheaper goods in the country, which is why they are shown to consume more compared to Singaporeans.
