Dok Kae Bi is the latest Korean BBQ buffet restaurant to open in Kuchai Lama. For those who are familiar with this suburb, Dok Kae Bi actually replaced Seoul Garden and sits right on top of Restoran Kuchai Lama. They are maintaining the traditional buffet concept where all the foods are placed in trays at the center of the restaurant.
From what we know, the restaurant is operated by a Korean family and the person in charge used to manage a well-known Korean BBQ chain in KL. Besides managing the restaurant, she is also hands on during food preparation to ensure the consistency of the taste and quality.
The price per pax for the Korean BBQ Buffet is RM39 nett which is on par with what other restaurants are charging. For grilling, they offer 6 types of meat (chicken and pork) and octopus, mostly marinated in spicy or sweet soy sauce.
There are more than a dozen of warm and competently prepared banchans to complement your meal too. As for soup, you get to choose between Kim Chi Jji Gae (pork kimchi stew) or Doen Jang Jji Gae (bean paste stew) and it can be refilled without limites.
Despite having somewhat limited meat choices, Dok Kae Bi triumps in the quality and flavor departments. Based on what we had, the BBQ items were as good, if not better than what you get at the normal ala carte Korean BBQ joints. The marination was done very well and every meat tastes distinctly different from each other.
Our favorites were the sweet soy sauce pork (char siew like taste) and spicy pork belly. Both were high enjoyable especially when paired with kimchi and mini Korean pancakes – so good that we had seconds and thirds of them.
Even the seemingly non-marinated meat like pork shoulder doesn’t taste bland. In fact if you looked closely they are seasoned with pepper and herbs for additional flavors.
If you value quality more than quantity in a buffet, I would wholeheartedly recommend Dok Kae Bi. Even more so considering we had an ala carte dinner recently at an established Korean BBQ restaurant which not only cost more, but the overall experience was not as positive as well.
