Situated at the oldest parts of Petaling Jaya, Heng Kee Bak Kut Teh needs no further introduction. Busiest during dinner hours, it is one of the few Bak Kut Teh restaurants in town that opens till late for supper. Ever since I started to work in PJ I have heard a lot of good things about them. Besides serving up delicious Bak Kut Teh, they are also well known for maintaining the quality of their food over the years.
Previously, I used to prefer the Klang style Bak Kut Teh with thick and dark broth, those that have a really strong herbal taste and served in clay pots. But sometimes the lighter and sweet variant taste equally good as well, especially when you feel like having a comforting meal.
Heng Kee’s Bak Kut Teh is prepared in such a way and served in separate bowls. The meat here is always a delight to eat, as it tastes tender after being cooked for long hours. Even the pork ribs were so soft and required hardly any effort to enjoy them off-the-bone.
Besides offering good quality meat and clear, non-oily soup, Heng Kee’s Yau Char Kwai (Chinese crullers) and golden needle mushroom are also one notch better than the rest.
Another thing I like about eating here is that they separate the mushroom, tofu pok and meat in individual bowls. Personally, I welcome this move because I’ve always had this nagging feeling that the mushrooms and tofu pok would introduce foreign tastes into the soup and ultimately affecting the overall flavor. And if you are wondering, all the side dishes were great as well and make perfect complements to an otherwise meaty meal.
All in all, Heng Kee is a value for money restaurant. Even though they are always packed, service is fast and efficient so you don’t need to wait long for the food to arrive. However, do note that you’d have to pay for refilling the precious soup.

Late BKT… Nice supper
I prefer BKT that is peppery. Not the klang type but the yoke yat or now, yu yi, type. :)
This is the place that I first taste BKT when I was young. They used to operate by the road side just opposite of this existing shop. Always love the way the prepare it and very different from those claypot ones where they put in everything together!
So which Heng Kee BKT is the better one? If it is the Menjalara, Kepong, that means I’ve tried the best.
Heng Kee Bak Kut Teh @ PJ Old Town, one of my flavour~~
Tried to visit this BKT today. Sadly I wasn’t able to locate this shop based on your direction. Went back home with empty stomach :(
After some Google I found out that your direction is wrong. It is at the intersection of Jalan 1/10 and Jalan 1/19, not 1/9!!! No wonder I couldn’t locate this BKT! Damn I am so sad :(
you should have asked around man, this shop should be famous enough the locals would know
I was eating this guys BKT since I was 12 years old (am 24 now by the way), before they shifted to their new location which is as per your post.
I like their special braised mushroom. and it is a taste which is somewhat almost comfort food like to me.
But ever since last year, they acted LCLY, poor service, cannot refill soup ( wtf, i just spent rm 90 for a family of 5, cannot refill?, hell, even if you charge me for it I don’t mind. Just don’t give me that dog face). Don’t know why, maybe they don’t mind losing a long time customer or two.
so me and my family stopped going there ever since, and when friends of mine want to go there, I vehemently tell them to go to the ss15 shop which i found that is just as yummy.
Regards,
BY
My parents already start having BKT at this place even before they are married and become my best place too since young.
It have been voted as one of the best 50 BKT in Malaysia and in deed their special braised mushroom is one of the best.
Love their tou fu pok too because you hardly find such tou fu pok serving in other BKT shops. The essence of his BKT is actually its small bowl of soup separated from the pork which have heavy herbal fragrance. Not many people will appreciate that.
However, i agree with BY that recent years it turns more oily and taste been dropping since as compare to last time. Reduce my visit there significantly.
BY: What is the shop name in SS15, I would like to visit too?
yes true. the male boss with glasses is a bit LSLY. It doesn’t help much when their prices keeps going up every couple of months.
