Key’s Char Koay Teow located not far from Sunway Carnival Mall at Seberang Jaya has been on my to try list for a long time because I have always noticed a buzz of customer activity there. It is also a favorite among the Malay community, with many claiming it as one of the best Char Koay Teow in the northern region of Malaysia.

Char Koay Teow is known for its minimal amount but at Key’s the portion was surprisingly satisfying even at the smallest order at RM3 only. Seasoning and ingredients aside, like any noodles the ‘wok hei’ is one of the most important aspects especially in Chinese style Char Koay Teow and Malay style Char Koay Teow is no exception either.

But I felt the cook used too much fire and because of that it left a slightly charred and smoky flavor in the noodles. That aside the gravy was pretty good, slightly sweeter and in fact the sweetest I have tasted so far. Whether it’s better if sweeter depends on the personal preference.
For me it was acceptable, as I wouldn’t expect all Char Koay Teow to have the same exact level of seasoning. But the charred flavor was surely undesirable, if not for that I would have given it a better score.

It is always a pleasure to see the cooks in action when they are frying the Char Koay Teow for the fire bursts and flames that occur.

Overall Char Koay Teow Key is not bad but both Alma and Ismal Char Koay Teow are still a few notches better. Worth a try if you are nearby and have a laptop because they have Wifi service. Quite uncommon considering it’s a road side restaurant.
