Pu Tien Restaurant 莆田 @ Tampines Mall

One weekend I met up with a friend at Pu Tien, a Chinese restaurant that serves traditional dishes from the city of the same name in the Fujian province, China. Pu Tien is probably most well known as the birthplace Mazu, the indigenous goddess of the sea.
Anyway, the restaurant was having a promotion where a rebate of $10 in voucher usable in the next visit would be given for every $50 spent. And it so happened that my friend had two of it.

Among the many local food and snacks in Pu Tien city, fried Hing Wa Beehoon (兴化米粉) is one of the more popular ones. Hing Wa Beehoon is finer than the normal beehoon, almost as thin as hair yet packs a crunchy punch on the palate.
The smallest portion costs $6, still sufficient to be shared between two people. Considering the cheap price tag of the dish, the amount of ingredients given was pleasantly generous. The dish uses a total of ten ingredients to create the wonderful flavor, in which among them, consisted of clams, prawns and even scallops.

Shredded Meat Bun ($2.80 each) does not look too appealing but tastes great.

For this, each diner would be given a plastic glove as well as a dining knife to handle and split the fried bun. Then the shredded meat should be sandwiched between the open bun and eaten. Three layer pork meat, delicious for its nicely distributed meat and fat is marinated in barbecue sauce then cooked with loads of sweet onions. The feeling is like having a soft, fluffy version of ‘siu bao’.

Bamboo Herbal Prawns @ $7.60, prawns were fresh and the soup was light and fragrantly herby.

A rather new item on the menu – Hing Wa Pork Ribs @ $12. Tastes sweet and the pork ribs were very meaty and tender.

Another noodle we had was Pu Tien Lor Mee (S) @ $6, which was quite a let down if compared with the Hing Wa Beehoon.. the noodles were thick and felt soggy but luckily the broth was good.

In all the food at Pu Tien is good and refreshing because they feature some unique dishes that are only commonly available in China. I hope they open a branch in Malaysia real soon.
