This year, Tonka Bean Café of Impiana KLCC Hotel will be offering more than 300 dishes for Iftar Ramadhan from 21 June to 13 July 2015. Priced at RM148 nett per person, the Ramadhan buffet will feature specially prepared dishes from different regions in Malaysia such as “Sup Gear Box”, roasted whole lamb and Briyani Gam.
Besides the delectable spread, guests will also be treated to unlimited durian, unlimited Baskin Robbins ice cream and Zam-Zam water brought all the way back from Mecca.
I was invited as part of the media to review the Ramadhan dinner buffet and here’s my observation. The entire buffet can be segregated into four sections: Western and local appetizers, hot food (mostly Malay dishes), show kitchen (Chinese dishes, noodles and finger food) and the outdoors for durian and hawker stalls.
Overall, I was very impressed with the variety available and even more pleased at the high quality of the food. OK, to be frank I did not taste every single dish.
But from what I sampled from the spread, nothing was bad and some of them were actually really good. I will be highlighting a few dishes that I thought stood out from the rest and were particularly memorable, so you can head straight for the good stuff (if you happen to go for this buffet).
The Aneka Kari Lautan was my favourite dish of the buffet. This lip-smacking curry was prepared with loads of fresh seafood like prawns, fish head, flower crab and squid for that robust flavour. Every ingredient in the curry was properly cooked and tasted right – in terms of texture.
There are three types of Briyani Gam – chicken, beef and lamb. Among the three, I liked the lamb briyani the most and they don’t skimp on the raisins and cashew nuts. Both the nasi tomato and nasi ulam were equally good too and go well with the seafood curry I mentioned earlier.
Seafood lovers won’t be disappointed by the assorted shellfish, prawns and cured salmon – all displayed on ice. No sashimi here though.
Lets set the expectations straight and clear – if you are expecting the satay here to rival your favourite stall or restaurant, I think it’s quite impossible.
That being said, the satay was well-marinated and tasted succulent and tender enough to be enjoyable. A good selection of sambal is also available for ulam-ulaman and I am glad they prepared them hot and spicy just the way they should be.
This is the show kitchen where you could see the chefs cooking live through the glass panel. Dishes such as Yong Tau Foo, Butter Prawns, Chili Crab, Stir Fried Ginger Beef and etc are available here.
One of the highlights of the buffet is the row of freezers containing dozens of flavours Baskin Robbins ice cream to choose from. A couple of toppings and sauces are provided for you to decorate your ice cream with.
But kids might be more smitten by the chocolate fountain next to the self-service ABC and cendol station. Plenty of colourful fruit skewers for them to dip into the pool of melted chocolate.
Besides ice cream, there are also numerous traditional cakes, puddings and local fruits to be enjoyed for dessert. And not to mention the eat-all-you-want durians. We were told that D24 will be the main variety for the durian and Musang King *might* make an appearance too if they could get hold of it.
Anyway, the durian we had that night was mostly from Thailand (can’t fool an ex-durian seller, it’s not durian season yet too) so I could only hope they will serve the real stuff when the durian season starts next month.
As for beverages, you are spoilt with choices. You can choose from a variety of chilled juices, fresh sugarcane juice, coffee (including the fancy ones), tea and even the ever-refreshing Thai coconuts.
Admittedly, Tonka Bean’s Ramadhan dinner buffet will not be cheapest in town. But if you can afford it, I don’t think you will be disappointed with what you paid for – quality and quantity.
