How good can coconut ice cream get? Apparently it can get ridiculously good. I have heard of Sangkaya‘s famous coconut ice cream for a while now, but it wasn’t until last weekend that I finally gave it a try. Before that, the last time I had a memorable coconut ice cream was in Bangkok at the Chatuchak market.
To be honest I was quite skeptical about the taste at first, and the expensive price tag did not help either. Shown above is their Signature @ RM10.50, which has 4 small scoops of ice cream on fresh coconut with free flow toppings.
From what I researched, their Signature was RM7.90 when they first started out at Jalan Alor last year, then it was increased to RM9.90 last month, and now it’s RM10.50. Man, they are really cashing in on the popularity.
Nevertheless, the coconut ice cream has a very smooth texture with an amazingly fresh coconut aroma. It’s like they managed to condense the flavor of a few coconuts into a few scoops of ice cream. And the scrapped out coconut flesh at the side is a really nice touch.
Anyway, we did not really mind paying for the hefty price tag because it was so delicious to the point that the price did not really matter anymore. Sangkaya’s fame is justified and their coconut ice cream is definitely worth a try at least once.
If you’re not convinced, just try the free samples they give out. Due to their popularity, the self-service topping station can get really cramped and unpleasant. So, get in and get out quick.
