Although rare, authentic Kolo Mee could still be found in KL if you know where to look for it. But just to be clear my definition of authentic is that the noodles should look and taste exactly like the ones I had in Kuching. I have had my fair share of ‘Sarawak Handmade Noodle’ at various food courts in KL and lets not kid ourselves, those are nowhere close to the real thing.
New 2020 restaurant at Pandan Indah is one of the places where decent Kolo Mee could be found. A normal serving costs RM4.50 and the portion is satisfyingly filling.
True to its authenticity, you will find only spring onion, minced pork and slices of char siew on a bed of thin, springy and eggy noodles. By default the noodles come in plain form but you could ask for the ‘red version’, where the noodle is mixed with char siew sauce for the reddish appearance and an enhanced sweet taste. I suggest trying the plain version first for a better appreciation of the noodle’s flavor.
That being said, the stall keeper should consider adding pork lard to the noodles to make it more fragrant and appetizing. Maybe it is already there but it sure could use a stronger dose.
Sarawak Laksa is also available here, passable quality only though.
