Spring Garden Chinese Restaurant in KLCC is one of the restaurant under Tai Thong Group Of Restaurants. One afternoon I saw a flyer advertising their latest promotion, which was 50% discount on selected dim sum and tong sui from 3pm-5pm.
I was immediately attracted to the promotion and went to take a look at the restaurant. It was lunchtime on a Saturday and the restaurant appeared empty. But when I returned two hours later it was full! I guess everyone was waiting for 3pm to have a late lunch or tea break lol.
We requested for the promotional menu and felt disappointed discovering the items on the 50% discount list were.. how do I put it.. ‘cheap’ ones lol. The ala-carte menu was no doubt more extensive and premium looking, same for the prices too. Luckily we were in just for a tea break. But hey it’s dim sum at KLCC so I think we can’t complain much about the price for the location and ambiance you get.
The Stir-Fried Radish Cake with Bean Sprouts @ RM8.50 was not bad at all although it looked a little underfried, because the wok hei was present. I would have enjoyed it more only if the radish cake was cut into smaller cubes before being stir fried. Smaller cubes = more flavor in each bite.
Deep Fried Shrimp Rolls with Mango @ RM9.50. A hint of sweet mango lifted the dish a little. To be honest most of the items are not worth the normal price, only after the discount they seemed rather reasonable to me.
Chicken Dumplings with Crab Roe @ RM8.50. This is perhaps the most worthy dish on the promotional menu but don’t expect too much on the taste.
The last dim sum we had, Deep Fried Prawn Salad @ RM9.50. Good thing they didn’t stinge on the prawn’s portion and there wasn’t any hint of them fried in reused oil. Usually that’s the first thing I would check for any deep fried dim sum I order. Other than that it was pretty normal tasting, nothing spectacular.
The tong sui was a total let down. Shown here is one of the 18 tong sui available, Peanut Rice Balls & Yam in Coconut Cream @ RM8. It didn’t taste sweet at all and the ingredients supposed to accompany the dessert were so pathetically little.
And how can a tong sui be called tong sui if it didn’t taste sweet at all? The word tong already meant sugar what lol. Fail.
Same goes for the Red Bean Cream with Lotus Seeds & Lily Bulbs @ RM8. Not impressive at all despite having a rather fancy name. Luckily I was paying only half price for it.
All I can say is, skip the tong sui altogether and go for the dim sum instead. Yeah I know the dim sum is not great, but still acceptable lah. One last complaint from me – it took them more than 15 minutes to give us the bill even though most of the customers have left the restaurant. Ironically that was the thing that frustrated us the most, not the quality of the food.Spring Garden KLCC (Pork Free, not sure if Halal)
