Bangsar is probably the last place you’d think of going for steamboat. But as long as Hong Kong HotPot is open, there will always a reason to come here to enjoy a steaming hot meal.
Hong Kong HotPot (香港热锅) is located in Telawi Square just above Piggy Tail and it’s kind of obvious that both restaurants are operated by the same management, or at least partners in some ways.
The first impression we got once we entered the restaurant was that it felt quite tight inside. Maybe it’s due to lack of space, or maybe they are simply trying to recreate the feeling of eating in an actual Hong Kong restaurant.
Either way, the atmosphere is upbeat thanks to the excellent choices of Cantopop music playing in the background.
There are a couple of interesting soup bases available like Fresh Tomato, Pumpkin and Imported HK Century Egg & Coriander soup. Since it was our first time here we played it safe by ordering a mix of Sakura Pork Bone Soup (this hardly ever goes wrong) and Fresh Tomato Soup @ RM30. If ordered individually, they would cost between RM23-25 each.
I have to say the Fresh Tomato Soup was a great choice and we loved it even more than the pork bone soup. At the end of the meal, the soup was simply delicious with a rich and slightly chunky texture.
Tired of the usual bean curd or tofu, then you should try the Imported HK Bean Curd Roll @ RM16 (half). The trick is to dip it in the soup for a few seconds to retain most of its crispiness.
The Korean Oysters @ RM13 (half) is also highly recommended. Just look at how plump and juicy they are. Very fresh and tastes sweet too.
Unfortunately for us the Berkshire Premium Pork Slice was already sold out during our visit. So we settled for the second best which is the Sakura Premium Pork Neck Slice @ RM15 (half). Every slice is so fatty which melts in your mouth but it’s certainly not for the health conscious.
We also had the Sakura Pork Shoulder Slice. If I remember correctly this is the half portion @ RM13, the serving size is quite generous.
Other things we tried included their Hand Made Prawn Meat Ball, Crab Egg Meat Ball – both @ RM11 and Ark Shell Meat @ RM15.
Despite looking nothing unusual, the meat balls tasted more than satisfying. If you could only pick one I’d say go for the prawn meat ball as the flavor is close to dim sum quality.
The condiments did not disappoint as well. Basically you just need to mix a spoonful of each ingredient into the saucer and it will make a great dipping sauce. It’s pretty fool proof.
You can tell that we were happy with the food. That’s because it was really a pleasant experience. In fact, this was one of the best steamboat meals we have had so far and I can’t really believe it’s at Bangsar.
One thing that made me ‘geram’ was to find out that they had a Groupon promotion during our visit. If we had bought the deal, we could have shaved about RM50 off the bill. That being said, Hong Kong HotPot is still worth visiting at full price.
