Decided to check out Yellow Brick Road after it won the Time Out KL Food Awards for best cafe recently. After further reading only I realized that Yellow Brick Road is also the sister cafe of The Red Beanbag at Publika. Well, that explains a lot about their popularity, especially among KL’s cafe hoppers.

Yellow Brick Road Cakes Counter

We reached the place around 4.30pm and it was obviously a bad time to drop by if you are looking for something proper to eat. That’s because it was the kitchen staff’s break time so only cakes and coffee were available. Not a biggie for us, since we had a late lunch and the cakes looked good anyway.

Yellow Brick Road Millionaire Cake

The Millionaire Cake @ RM13 came as a recommendation from the helpful staff. Even though I did not try all the cakes here, it’s not hard to see why this is the best seller. The layers are moist, soft and the cream between them gives a tart refreshing flavor to balance the sweetness from the chocolate, while the light and delicate almond crumble melts in your mouth.

Yellow Brick Road Chocolate Chip Dough

The Chocolate Chip Dough cake @ RM12 won’t disappoint, but it pales in comparison with the Millionaire Cake.

Yellow Brick Road Cappuccino

Since one of the co-founders is a Malaysian Barista Champion, I had high expectations for the coffee. Sadly though, the expectation was simply not met and the Cappuccino @ RM11 tasted off. Maybe he was not there to pull the shots. Or maybe it was just an off-day for them.

Guinness Float

Luckily I scanned the menu thoroughly and found something less than ordinary. The Guinness Float @ RM22 might have a hefty price tag for a supposedly float that’s simply a mix of root beer, Guinness stout and a scoop of ice cream but I am glad that I tried it – at least it was good. Worth a try if you could stomach the price.

All in all, Yellow Brick Road cafe is a warm and cozy place to relax and enjoy the serene neighborhood surrounding Damansara Heights. The service we received was great and I was quite surprised by the number of local staff they employ to serve their customers. I gotta warn you about sitting outside the cafe though, because the flies are quite annoying to the experience.
