It could be forgiving for kids to be afraid of dentists, but as adults we shouldn’t be. As dreadful as it is going to a dentist, it is an important practice because these visits are essential for the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums. Fortunately, the company I work for provides dental benefits so I make full of use of it by visiting a dentist at least twice a year.

Since it has been more than 6 months since my last scaling session, I dropped by Klinik Pergigian Chang for a quick check-up. After a 10-minute inspection, I was relieved to know that my teeth are still in good shape considering the dentist’s overall comment was “OK wor, your teeth“.
However, there was a new thing he observed which wasn’t told to me after completing dozens of dentist appointments in my life. He asked if I have been brushing quite hard because he noticed that my gums are starting to show symptoms of receding gums.
I asked what did he mean by that. Then he showed me a diagram on gum recession, in which the dentin became exposed after long period of brushing too hard. This is a main contributor to a common dental problem: tooth sensitivity. No wonder I felt a slight discomfort when I took the chill test, it was the beginning of the problem.

Call me ignorant but I was surprised to know that tooth sensitivity is not something people are born with – it’s actually caused by lack of oral hygiene. And in my case, it was due to the misinformation that I grew up with, like brushing hard could remove germs and food particles better when in fact I was only damaging my gums.
Luckily I found out about this before the damage was permanent. And for those of you reading this, you would be pleased to know that tooth sensitivity is preventable with the necessary steps. One of the most effective way to protect yourself from the symptoms is to adopt an advance oral care regime. It might sound advance and all, but it’s as simple as using the right products, floss and go for regular dental check-up.
Although there are a few brands of desensitizing products in the market, only a few are designed with to protect and lessen the pain associated with tooth sensitivity.
Sensodyne is undeniably the most popular and trusted especially by people with sensitive teeth in Malaysia. So I wasn’t exactly surprised that the dentist also recommended me to use Sensodyne’s toothpaste and mouthwash, which are clinically proven to relieve the symptoms of sensitive teeth.
Sensodyne’s Mouthwash also contains active ingredients that work inside the tooth to build soothing, long-lasting protection around the nerve. Its fluoride formula helps to strengthens teeth too.
After using Sensodyne’s toothpaste and mouthwash for a week, I could feel that my mouth is no longer dry, there’s no weird residue and my more importantly no burning sensation at all. Personally, I prefer the Extra Fresh flavor that keeps my breath fresh and does not affect the taste of the food at all.
