Recently, I have been having my dinner at Kepong Food Court (甲洞美食中心) quite frequently. Besides Thai Taste which is now my regular Thai food haunt, I have also discovered a few other good food stalls, one of them being the Sarawak Kolok Mee. But if you are a Sarawakian, stop reading now because it WILL trigger you.
Obviously this is not how an authentic Kolo Mee should look like. It’s more of a mash up of Hakka Mee and Wantan Mee with some elements of Kolo Mee thrown in as well. Most of the stalls I know usually just call this Sarawak Noodle.
That said, and although this tastes nothing like the real Kolo Mee, I still have to say it’s delicious. From what I was told, the noodle is homemade which results in a unique springy texture that you rarely get elsewhere. The seasoning is made up of lard and onion oil which gives it an aromatic flavor. You can smell it as soon as you start tossing the noodle around.
A handful of different toppings are available but they are simply mix and match of prawn, char siew, fish cake and minced pork.
So do check it out if you happen to be around, as this is one of the better Sarawak Noodle I have eaten so far. The nasi lemak stall at the other end is also popular and worth trying if you fancy wild boar curry and fried chicken.
