Jalan Imbi‘s open-air hawker centre offers some of the best foods in KL. Besides excellent Nyonya kuih, you can also get awesome Teochew char koay teow here. It is also widely referred to as KL-style char koay teow.

Teo Chew Char Koay Teow with Egg

Teochew char koay teow is characterized by its darker appearance and emphasizes on the use of lard and cockles. And of course, being a fried noodle ‘wok hei’ is an extremely important attribute and it’s used to differentiate the good from the rest.
Other ingredients like prawn, egg and fishcakes are usually not included. So count yourself lucky if you happen to get a plate with any of them.

The stall has been around for more than 50 years but it was originally stationed along Jalan Raja Laut. Then it shifted locations a few times before finally settling down here. The proprieter has since passed away and now his daughter carries on his legacy; assisted by two whom I assume are relatives.

Frying Koay Teow Imbi

Once they reach the site and setup the stall, you can place your order immediately. In fact, it’s recommended that you do so because the order will start to pile.
One thing I notice is that she will first fry up some eggs while waiting for the pan reach the desired heat. As soon as she’s done with a dozen of eggs or so, then only she would fry the noodles.

You should also know that fried koay teow mee is the preferred order (by the lady) here. If you insist on having koay teow only, you will be told to wait longer, and others who come later will get to eat first.
That’s because most of the orders here are a mix of koay teow and yellow mee, making your single noodle order the odd one out. It’s all business, nothing personal.

Imbi Char Koay Teow with Cockles

When the char koay teow arrived, I knew we’re in for a treat as it filled our table with a delightfully smoky aroma. Digging in, the noodle is moist but not wet and it’s accompanied by a generous serving of fresh and large, juicy cockles which contributed a lot of flavor. For RM5.80 a portion, it’s pretty damn good.
