Mellben Seafood @ Ang Mo Kio
Jun 22nd
Before I left Singapore I had a farewell dinner with my close friends at Mellben Seafood, a seafood restaurant at Ang Mo Kio specializing in crab dishes. Uncle Leong (the brother), another seafood restaurant that has deeply impressed me with their amazing crab specialties is just a stone’s throw away.
Many people maintained that Mellben is the better one, and that they only go to Uncle Leong if the queue at Mellben is too long or unbearable. Not the thing you want to hear as a restaurant owner, really. But ultimately it was the comparison that fueled my interest and made me even more determined to try Mellben Seafood. Simply because if Uncle Leong was mindblowingly awesome enough for me, of course I would want to try a better one – provided if the claims are true lah.
Unfortunately for us, while ordering we were told that the quality of the Sri Lankan crabs on that day was below par because they were not as large and meaty as usual. We were also told that there would be a 45 minutes waiting time. LOL at that moment our mood was at least half gone already. I even anticipated a disappointing meal despite nothing was served yet.
After a painful one hour wait, our food finally came! Firstly, Butter Cream Crab @ $36 (1kg), tasty but the crabs were really not as large as told. Not much meat except in the crab claw.
10 Mouths Seafood Restaurant @ Balestier Road, Singapore
Oct 16th
Last night I had my first Chilli Crab in Singapore at 10 Mouths Seafood Restaurant – 十口海鲜, Balestier Road. The restaurant was recommended by a colleague, who has had dinner there a couple of times and found the crabs there to be good and affordable.
Only three of us were so we only ordered 4 dishes. First was of course the highly recommended Chilli Crabs. The crabs were supposed to be charged according to the market price. But the current promotion is that all crabs cooked in either Chilli or black pepper style are charged at $20 per serving.
The Chilli Crab‘s portion was just nice, as there were three mud crabs – each for everyone. Although the crabs were indeed much smaller compared to the ones I had not long ago at Uncle Leong, I didn’t mind at all because of the huge difference in pricing. Besides, the crabs were quite meaty too despite being only medium in size.
Uncle Leong Seafood – Crabbylicious Crabs @ Ang Mo Kio Ave 3
Oct 4th
If you guys don’t know yet, I have relocated to Singapore due to work reasons. I have been here for a week and I will continue to be here for at least a year or longer till my new project ends. To be honest, I was quite hesitant about traveling to Singapore because everything I had is in Malaysia but I took up the opportunity after all.
I am currently in the midst of sorting out my life – finding a room to stay, getting Internet access, adapting to new job responsibilities and etc. So if you feel I have been slow in updating and find my recent entries are posted very cincai-ly, this is the reason lol.
Since I am talking about Singapore, I might as well talk about the food. One month prior to relocating to Singapore, SL and I took a weekend trip here. That time, I kinda knew I was going to work in Singapore soon but nothing was officially confirmed yet.
The first night of our trip we took a bus to Ang Mo Kio Ae 3 to try some crab dishes in Uncle Leong Seafood Restaurant, a seafood restaurant highly recommended by her sister who have dined there a couple of times.
I noticed that many seafood restaurant in Singapore serves Sri Lanka Crab for their crab dishes, Uncle Leong included. Sri Lanka Crabs are like a much bigger version of the mud crab or meat crab we always see in Malaysia.
A must try dish in Uncle Leong would be his Crab Mee Hoon, in which a whole Sri Lanka Crab is used to prepare a claypot’s portion of mee hoon. I was quite skeptical about the taste initially but the dish totally blew my mind. It was freaking CRABBYLICIOUS.
This is the size of a single claw from the Sri Lanka crab, just look at its monstrous size (use the chopstick and compare). And this is found in a coffee shop under in a normal HDB block, not any classy seafood restaurant! Click here to continue reading >
Cheap Tasty Crabs @ Tak Fok Hong Kong Seafood, Kepong
Jul 13th
How much does a kg of crab cost in your local [tag]seafood[/tag] restaurants? RM35? RM40? Well, there’s a famous seafood restaurant at Desa Aman Puri, Kepong which draws crowd due to their cheap and tasty crabs. Tak Fok Hong Kong Seafood Restaurant serves their crabs at RM18 per kg, the cheapest I’ve seen and eaten so far. Crabs baked with butter and cheese is something new for me. And I absolutely loved it!
