Tim Pun Gor Gor Desserts & Tong Sui @ Metro Perdana, Kepong
Aug 28th
Tim Pun Gor Gor is a dessert and tong sui shop at Metro Perdana, Kepong. Here, you are sure to be spoilt for choices because there are over 100 types of Hong Kong styled desserts and hot and cold tong sui to choose from at reasonable prices.
Fa Sang Wu (花生糊) @ RM3 – a little diluted to me but still quite creamy, not too sweet too.
Durian Pancake Roll, a nice treat for durian lovers. It was served cool from the fridge and a plastic knife was given to cut it. The smooth durian fillings was contrasted with strands of durian fibers, I liked it.
Fresh Mixed Fruits Noodles (鮮什果撈河) @ RM8 was well presented like a blooming flower with slices of banana, kiwi, watermelon and peach.
The noodles are not real noodles you see. They are more like koay teow shaped, frozen sweet soya bean milk with a jelly like texture that creates a slurping sound when you eat. It easily became our favorite because of it uniqueness, I don’t think this kind of dessert is commonly found.
Not all the desserts were good though. Mango Pudding (芒果布丁) @ RM5.50 was a slight disappointment due to its extremely gluey texture. Plus the mango taste was minimal, in fact almost non-existent if not for the cubes of mangoes in the pudding.
Overall quite a nice place to hang out for dessert and tong sui after a meal. The plenty choices alone is a big plus point. Lack of parking on the other hand, is a HUGE minus point.

Ramadhan Buffet 2009 @ JW Marriott Hotel KL – 108 Traditional Favorites, RM54++
Aug 25th
I know many people are looking for a cheaper Ramadan Buffet. So I searched high and low for a prestigious hotel that offers Ramadhan Buffet at an affordable price, somewhere around RM50. That’s not an easy task especially if you are looking around Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle. Most hotels’ Ramadan Buffets are either too expensive (RM78-98++) or the hotel itself is located too far away from KL (eg. Putrajaya, Subang)
Then I saw JW Marriott’s Buka Puasa Buffet of 108 Traditional Favorites priced at RM54++ per person. I thought it fit most buffet goers’ budget and the hotel itself is prestigious enough since it’s located next to Starhill Gallery along Jalan Bukit Bintang.
The buffet is held poolside with stalls decorated in of Malay-style that give a some what ‘kampung’ ambiance. The highlight of the entire buffet gotta be the Whole Roast Lamb‘s carving station.
Chef Jamal carving the roast lamb for the diners. Bubur lambuk is also available here.
The roast lamb was not bad, better than many that I have tasted before because it was served hot and not too dry. Click here to continue reading >
Sek Yuen Chinese Restaurant @ Jalan Pudu, KL
Aug 21st
Sek Yuen, an old Chinese Restaurant located in Jalan Pudu is one of the oldest restaurants in KL that has managed to maintain the look and feel of the 50′s. One can easily mistake the building for a community hall if not for the restaurant’s signage.
Stepping into Sek Yuen is like stepping into a time portal that brings you back to half a century ago, when the waiters wore vintage shirts and the captain clad in pure white t-shirt and short pants. Actually I never knew or even heard about about this place before but I feel most KL people should know it for its long history. It was not until a friend brought us there for dinner I got to discover this gem.
I was puzzled seeing there are two Sek Yuen Restaurants along Jalan Pudu – one with white signage and the other red. At first I thought it was due to family feud in business again, prompting the brothers or sisters to split the restaurant into two.
But that really wasn’t the case. Both are actually the same, just that the white one is equipped with ceiling fans only, while the latter with air-conditioning. Food ordered in the air-conditioned restaurant would still be cooked in the old kitchen, then delivered across the road to the diners. By the way, that’s a cool uncle doing a Lui Kei lol.
Before I go into the food, I apologize for the images’ poor quality so it might affect your perception towards the food in Sek Yuen. But if there’s any restaurant that doesn’t need good presentation in their food to appeal, I dare say Sek Yuen is one of it.
A whole Pei Pa Duck was RM42 and it’s seriously one of the things you gotta try in Sek Yuen. It was a meaty and lean duck roasted perfectly with great charcoal smell and flavor, very tasty. If you are interested in this dish it is advised to make a reservation for it or simply come early because of its popularity. Click here to continue reading >
Hon Kee Famous Porridge @ Petaling Street, KL
Aug 18th
It’s been more than a year since I visited Hon Kee 汉记靓粥 for their famous porridge. How time flies. I remembered my first time eating there. SL brought me there for breakfast on the day I traveled back to Penang for my new job. Now, I am back to Cyberjaya and it’s my turn to be the guide – my parents came down to KL for a short visit not long ago and I brought them to here. They liked it!
Hon Kee was still as busy as ever so do come early if you want to have a nice seat. We were early, but weren’t so fortunate to get a table at the stall. Because of that we had to sit on the other side of the road near the ikan bakar stall, which was kinda deserted and dark (even for a morning).
I think the Raw Snakehead Fish Porridge (Sang Yu Zhuk) here is the nicest.. Click here to continue reading >
