Nasi Kandar Kampung Melayu @ Kampung Melayu, Air Hitam
Jun 5th
I have heard a lot about the famous Nasi Kandar at Kampung Melayu but never tried it before due to their operating hours from 6:30am to noon. Having Nasi Kandar early in the morning just seems kinda odd, don’t you think? Well, at least for me.
But hey everything gotta have its first time, right? Moreover it is said to be one of the best and also the hidden gem among the already well known ones like Hameediyah, Kayu, Pelita, Line Clear, Merlin and Shariff so there’s simply no reason to skip this.
A huge piece of chicken, some squids (full with eggs) and a portion of long beans cost RM8. Not too expensive considering its Nasi Kandar but not cheap as well. Reasonable at best, as I could be easily ‘chopped’ RM12-15 for the same dishes at other places.
First Pelita Nasi Kandar @ Chai Leng Park, Perai
Apr 2nd
Pelita Nasi Kandar is the largest chain nasi kandar restaurant in Malaysia that came a long way from a small stall in a coffee shop at Chai Leng Park, Perai. It is amazing how fast and furious a business can grow. In less than 20 years Pelita Nasi Kandar has 26 branches spanning over 5 states, plus an international one at Chennai, India too.
You would think that Pelita serves the same curry dishes throughout their chain of restaurants but that is not true. Just curry mutton alone I have tasted a few styles and the best one so far for me can be found at Pelita Giant Hypermarket at Bayan Baru.
The mutton is cut into smaller pieces instead of being served in one large chunk hence able to absorb more flavor from the spices and gravy when cooked. Simply delicious and addictive with ‘kuah campur’. It was my favorite Pelita restaurant when I was still in Penang.
Hameed Nasi Kandar @ Signature Food Court, KLCC
Nov 6th
For those working in KLCC, I don’t know if you knew this. There’s a good and cheap Nasi Kandar stall in Signature Food Court at KLCC’s second floor.
Whenever I don’t feel like spending a lot for meal while shopping in KLCC, I’d head to Hameed’s Nasi Kandar for a plate of their nice and cheap nasi kandar. Seriously, RM4.80 for a meat and vegetable nasi kandar meal is damn cheap in KLCC. Heck, it’s even cheaper than what I could get in Cyberjaya!
My favorite would be Nasi Kandar Campur Kambing with kuah campur (mixed curry gravy) It tastes a lot better than many nasi kandar stalls out there, believe me. If you’re not into soft drinks, you’d be happy to know Hameed Nasi Kandar also sells the usual Malaysian drinks like teh or milo ais. Price is around RM1.80-RM2.00 if I am not mistaken.
Instead of curry chicken, Ayam Kicap (chicken in dark soya sauce) which tasted a bit sweet is included in the Nasi Kandar Campur Ayam. The portions might be a little small for some, but it does the job for me.
Nasi Kandar Line Clear, off Penang Road
Jun 26th
Nasi Kandar Line Clear located in an alley off Penang Road, between two buildings offers one of the most authentic [tag]nasi kandar[/tag] in [tag]Penang[/tag]. Being in business for nearly 50 years, it is also among the oldest nasi kandar stalls. If you didn’t know, Penang is the place where nasi kandar is born. It has become so famous, that many nasi kandar stalls and chain restaurants are mushrooming all over [tag]Malaysia[/tag].
If there’s something stopping me from eating nasi kandar, it would be the price. Well, and sometimes being health conscious lol. Most restaurants charge exoribant price of RM6-7 for a simple plate of one meat and two vege. You can be put that worry aside when eating at [tag]Line Clear[/tag], their nasi kandar is very reasonably priced.
