Ho Soon Tomyam Thai Seafood Restaurant @ Bukit Mertajam
Feb 8th
Ho Soon Thai Tomyam Seafood restaurant was recommended by the helper who comes to help clean our house weekly. According to her the restaurant is always buzzing with families – something she knew because she works in the restaurant at night. Taking this as a hint of good food as well as to try something new, we decided to have a Thai meal at Ho Soon for our Christmas family dinner.
Well she was right about the buzz. During dinner time around 6pm, the restaurant was already almost full by the time we reach. If we reached 5 minutes later we would had have to wait for an empty table.
Needless to say, Tomyam is a must and we had a small portion of Tomyam Seafood @ RM18. The amount of seafood like prawns, squids and slices of fish was good, fresh and justified for the price. I like the Tomyam soup too. It was quite thick and slightly sweet, not too sour nor too spicy. Personally, I prefer this variation more because I am not too fond of sourish stuff.
Thai Steam Black Pomfret with Chili Lime Sauce @ RM38. We felt the portion was a little too big for the four of us but we enjoyed it nonetheless.
Serai Thai Restaurant @ Sec 3, Shah Alam
Sep 2nd
A short chit chat with Serai Satay Bar‘s owner Qistina revealed that their family restaurant – Serai Thai at Shah Alam serves one of the best Butter Prawn in Malaysia as voted by readers of The Star in 2008.
Because Shah Alam is too far for me and I am not familiar with the city, I never really dared to venture there. And the many number of roundabouts in Shah Alam is pretty scary for unfamiliar people too. But with the help of my new found gadget – a GPS unit loaded with malfreemaps, going to Serai Thai was no sweat.
Maybe due to Ramadhan month, the restaurant was said to be full when we called in to make a reservation at 7pm. After breaking fast hour the restaurant was almost empty and we were the only customers lol. This is the highly regarded Butter Prawn, priced at RM30 and had 7 medium sized prawns. Do you know that Butter Prawn’s recipe was created in Malaysia?
Now I wouldn’t say Serai Thai’s Butter Prawn is the best in Malaysia but it was good alright. I found the prawns to be a little tough, maybe overcooked. The desired springy texture in the prawn was just lacking. Click here to continue reading >
Siam Express @ Queensbay
Dec 10th
If there is a list of restaurants doomed to fail because of bad management and service, Siam Express will definitely be on it.
As seen from this, Siam Express has an outlet each in Gurney Plaza and [tag]Queensbay[/tag]. Also, I notice that most [tag]Thai food[/tag] restaurants like to use black as the theme. Just Thai in 1-Utama would be an example. In Siam Express, all waiters dress in black and food is served in black plates. Heck, even the environment is dark.
I ordered a plate of Seafood Tomyam Fried Rice Wrapped in Omelette because it sounded nice. But what arrived later was a real disappointment, look at its portion! And that pathetically thin layer of omelette! Taste wise it was quite good, but the price RM12.90 for something like this is unjustified.
Pineapple Fried Rice @ RM12.90 tasted bland. And pineapples were given in tiny bits, not chunks. Compared to Just Thai’s version of pineapple fried rice, this one loses by miles.
During the meal, we requested for belacan from a young waitress for the bland Pineapple Fried Rice. She totally forgot about it like 2 minutes later and we had to call for another waiter. This time, it took him 5 minutes to search for a saucer plate and fill it with belacan. And they still dared to charge us 10% for the lousy service. What service? Worse still, we saw a couple being shouted at by one of the elderly worker. She instructed them to pay at the counter instead of bringing them the bill. So, please avoid this Thai food restaurant altogether if you are in Queensbay. Until they change their staff’s attitude, I don’t see any reason to patronize Siam Express at all.
Von Thai Cafe
Sep 14th
Von Thai Cafe is a [tag]Thai food[/tag] restaurant in Relau. My colleagues brought me here few weeks ago for lunch. Von Thai is a corner shop located opposite PISA (Penang International Sports Arena) a block away from Public Bank. They serve set lunch only @ RM8.80 per set. Set lunches are available ranging from Set Lunch A to M (IIRC), each with different combination of Thai dishes. For this post, Set O was ordered. FYI all sets come with 3 dishes and rice.
Every set lunch comes with a glass of Tiger Beer, either warm or chilled. LOL just kidding, these are Chinese tea
What would Thai food be without Tomyam? This small bowl of Tomyam soup contained 2 medium sized prawns and meatballs. The sourness and spiciness of the soup were just nice, making it really tasty. Drinking it really opened our appetite
Mixed vegetables.
Pud Pet Chicken (Curry) This dish tasted like Kapitan Chicken.. but spicier.
I really like the Thai Omelette, it carries a very fragrant smell. I am pretty sure the green thin slices in the omelette are the reason behind it.. not sure what are they though.
Because I was sharing the lunch set with Siang Leng, we ordered an extra side dish, Belacan Chicken @ RM1.70 per piece.
Dessert is also included, a small serving of coconut milk with red jellies. Dishes available in other sets include Pandan Chicken (chunk of chicken meat grilled in pandan leaves), Kerabu (sweet spicy mango salad), Fried Fish with Kerabu, Green Curry Chicken and Thai Deep Fried Kangkung. Von Thai Cafe is recommended because of the good food and reasonable pricing, I felt like I was paying less for more eating here lol.
